I studied in a pretty male-dominated field, and there were basically only three female students. Nevertheless, they would always stick together, meeting for lunch and for homework, etc. By comparison, I play in an amateur orchestra where men are in a minority, and we recently noticed that we do not have a single desk that is shared by two men – it's always either two women or mixed.
When I was single, I had "strategic" reasons for trying to get to know women, but even now, sitting next to a woman still seems "more fun" than sitting next to another man. Every time there are only men in the room, it feels a little "weird" to me.
In my parents' generation ("boomers"), it appears to be different: I know several groups of men that meet on a regular basis, either just to hang out or for specific activities, and they have given themselves names that clearly exclude women. I don't think they do that out of sexism, but maybe they just think it's healthy to meet specifically with other men once in a while.
Do you have similar experiences with male-only spaces disappearing in younger generations? Do you think there are any political reasons behind that, or is it just a natural development? Do you regret it?
