Women work less and earn less, yet women end up with more money to spend. I can’t figure out why feminists complain about this.

Women earning more explains why commercials cater to women, but it does not explain the growing anti-male attitude.

Insider the incredibly misandric commercial Gillette put out a couple years ago. It says much about the current state of our culture when a company selling products to men feels bashing men is good for sales. If there is even an unproven allegation of a company acting poorly towards women, there’s talk of boycott, lawsuits, etc. at the same time a company blatantly bashing men is just accepted, even by most men.

Gillette: Men are horrible and need to do better.

Men: You're right, I need to replace all my Gillette products with products from a company who doesn't hate me.

Gillette: Crap, well lets show men as firemen and pretend that never happened.

Reality: We need to talk about the huge profit loss you recently took because you took a giant crap on your customer base.

One thing I noticed especially on radio ads is that man are often portrayed as dummies and losers. One ad in my local radio there's a guy saying that he feels like "Albert Einstone" (he's so dumb he doesn't even know who Einstein is) and another one where the narrator has to say that he lives with his mom.

Men have always been less likely to participate in shopping but have only been portrayed with complete disdain in commercials within the past decade so that theory doesn't hold up.

"Diaper commercials have gotten better (in their portrayal of men) because men have gotten better with parenting."

Diaper commercials aren't any better than they've ever been and men aren't better at parenting than they've ever been either. That's just a reading of the writers own internal biases into the observations. Instead of that loaded language this would be a better way to word it: "Diaper commercials cater to men more now because men are more likely to buy and change diapers now." That doesn't make the commercial better or worse or the parenting better or worse - It's just a reflection of how the division of labor works in marriages today.

Yes, good fathers are a recent invention. Basic human decency is a recent discovery for manhood.

It's hardly a "major issue" but I think there are so many displays of "casual" bias against men.

It may not a major issue itself, but it is reflective of a major issue within our society. These commercials portray sexist representations of men as emotional, weak, and stupid.. but at the end of each commercial is always the implicit nod to the female audience - "Men, am I right ladies?". With the exception of a few feminist-bucks marketing firms that trick companies into perpetrating flops like the Gillette debacle, the thing that's really changed in the past decade is the growing bigotry of women and the growing acceptability in society of hating men. The advertising is just a reflection of that.

Well, that and the fact that companies are hiring a of comedians to develop and work in their commercials and the comedy scene is rife with exactly this attitude: Self deprecating men who hate on men and pander to women.

I recently saw a financial commercial portray the husband as an idiot.

Scene opens with an attractive Asian woman sitting with attractive Asian man on a couch discussing their finances. Cut to middle aged American guy, looking disheveled, who walks in on them. He looks like he could be the landscaper. It isn’t until she calls him “honey” and suggests he should sit in on the meeting that we discover he’s her husband. He demurs and the scene cuts out. I’ll see if I can find it.

You already lost if your grouping yourselves against eachother based of gender, yall should stand united based of species. Embrace your differences, admire others for ways you yourself are not. Fuck I know I wouldn't want to fall inlove with myself or be surrounded by nothing but me. I need people who have different views to challenge my own and keep me growing and learning. Stop worrying about how you have it worse and start being compassionate for how bad they have it. Regardless of your struggle they have theirs as well. That will never change. Stop trying to make people see your side of the story and start understanding where they are coming from, maybe then they will be willing to hear you out. Someone has to be the person to make the first step and I will stand up and say I will be one of those people. Love is more powerful and saving than disdain. It's okay to be different.

I'll tell you what, as someone who wrote and directed a short commercial about a residential grade ladder See here, it's a no-win scenario. I didn't intend for the dude to come off dumb, just playful. I got chased up and down the comment boards saying that I should be unpowered by the female character or, more so, by the male character. (note- look how many views it has, it's been posted several times and taken down due to peoples comments) IDK; advertising is set up based on its target audience. At a point, I'd say you have to pick your battles. If a soap commercial offends anyone and that's the worst thing to happen to them that day- they have a pretty good life.

Quick side note, that's me in the white shirt when they cut outside, and three guys are pounding Red Bulls.

Edit 1* I just noticed they posted the wrong version, reaching out to the company post-labor day. This version isn't color corrected or has any of the mastered sounds.
