I just learned of the Pygmalion Effect. Seems to me that it pretty much scientifically defines hypergamy in females.

I'm unsure how the Pygmalion Effect could be seen as a demonstration of hypergamy?

The PE describes situations where someone's high expectations improves our behavior and therefore our performance in a given area. It suggests that we do better when more is expected of us. Like the example in the video with the children who were all the same IQ, but the ones who teachers were falsely told "scored higher" ended up doing better on tests. This is because the teachers spent more time with their "star pupils", making it so those kids would have a higher chance of succeeding anyway.

Hypergamy, on the other hand, is used to describe when a man or woman marries and/or forms a sexual relationship with a person of a superior sociological, financial, or educational background. Some definitions include when you think your partner is more sexually appealing or emotionally supportive. In the general manosphere, they solely talk about hypergamy in women rather than both sexes, which I find disingenuous, and also include things like Briffaults law (monkey branching). Basically the idea that women are only loving or loyal to a man if she can gain social or financial benefit from staying with him, and when/if a superior male comes by she will accept his advances rather than remaining with her current one.

So I admit to being at a loss how the Pygmalion Effect is related to hypergamy. The former is about self-fulfilling prophecies based on one's beliefs, the latter is about how people tend to try and marry or fuck upwards.

Unless you're saying that a man or woman who is given positive attention by the opposite sex is more likely to be hypergamous than those who are not? Presumably because men and women who don't receive said attention don't believe they can be hypergamous in the first place, and therefore are instead content with the partner they have.

That last part about complimenting men is really interesting but I have a different take on it.

I’ve definitely heard men complain that they never get compliments, and getting one is a treat for them. I’ve complimented a few men in my life just to be nice, I would say very platonic things like “That’s a great shirt” or “Your haircut is really nice!”. And every single time the man would immediately become interested and try to follow up by getting my name and number and a date. I now make an effort to NEVER compliment men unless I know them personally.

It seems men mistake compliments as interest because the ONLY time they ever hand out compliments to women is when they are exclusively attracted to her. Anecdotally, I’ve asked my guy friends about this and they all admitted they would never compliment a woman unless they were attracted to her.

Which got me thinking, almost all the compliments I’ve gotten from men have exclusively been about my physical looks. Women and gays on the other hand will compliment me on other things like my outfit or personality.

Not saying my opinion is the case 100% of the time, but I think male projection plays a role.

Agreed, this effect is real.

Another way of describing it is that it is a massive feedback loop. For some reason, there seems to be a winner-take-all system in our society - where we elevate those who have some wins, increasing the gap between the winners and losers.

I recall reading that in some tribes pre-agriculture, there were measures against this. If someone managed to be too much of a winner, the tribe intervened and distributed resources in a more just manner. Of course, this was only some tribes. Others did allow a few individuals to take the lion share of resources. Giving people too much is dangerous, just as giving someone nothing is dangerous.

Frankly, we could solve most of this issues with hypergamy if there was a cap on each man. Heck, the Greek Empires had a limit on the amount of personal wealth a person could hold. This kept the senators in check. Plus, it allowed more people to enter the market with innovation and perspective.

Confidence that is derived from external sources is fake. So the idea that women are super confident and at the same time they need constant validation about their looks and desirability from other people (whether going to the club to get attention or posting sexy photos on Instagram) is absolutely preposterous.

If your confidence is dependent on how others perceive you than it is fake confidence.

I grew up in an over-saturated self-esteem environment where participation trophies were given. As a child I instinctively knew this was patronizing as fuck and have since developed a deep suspicion and a sense of insult whenever I get rewarded, congratulated, or complimented in any way. I take such shit as a mild insult because half the time it's just pure ego-stroking and the rest of the time it's not truly merited. I know when I have accomplished something and I do not need to be reminded of my accomplishments with a little gold star on my forehead like some kind of mentally and emotionally stunted dolt.

So I am the opposite of being starved for encouragement, I tell people who try to encourage or compliment me to take their sentiment and shove it up their ass. So no rising dopamine levels for me, the only think that rises is the test of my patience.
