Well, in my case he mentioned that he wanted to buy me something. So I spent $40 on a gift that can be easily regifted just in case. I will only give it if he gives me a gift first.

It's a new relationship so I don't really know for longer relationships, for I only had those pre-FDS and I would NOT recommend doing anything I did back then.

Girl, just get him a card and wrote something in it. Cards are acceptable gifts to men who haven't set and regularly upheld a standard of THEM giving YOU quality gifts.

I use this as a flag too, if men ask me what I'm getting them, or suggest I make them something -they're telling on themselves. They only care about what they can get from you- not how they can make you happy

If it’s been less than 6 months, I would gift either sweets, tea, some wine, maybe a sweater if he had gotten me gifts in the past. I wouldn’t stress about it. If it’s been like 3 months, then maybe only a bottle of wine and a card or chocolate bar.

When I'm dating someone, I always discuss budgets first for things like the holidays where we'd be exchanging gifts, and make an educated guess for something like a birthday if his comes first.

After a few months, though, you should know your partner's gifting style, and if it's not good, it's a sign to leave. I'm an exceptional gift giver, and while I recognize others struggle with gift giving more than I do, there's a line between "I don't consider myself a good gift giver but I put in effort" and "I don't consider myself a good gift giver so I don't even bother." It's not rocket science, and anyone can figure out how to get a good gift.

In hindsight, it's almost laughable how little effort my NVM ex put into gifts for me. For my last birthday with him, he got me a $30 gift from Amazon comprised of items I already owned and didn't need more of. Compare that to my current boyfriend who bought me a very thoughtful, luxury gift for my birthday. Even though he says he's not a good gift giver, he did an outstanding job because he actually put in effort without using the "but I'm no good" excuse.

For a man (also unloved relatives), you can find easily nice gifts at the "Dollar Store" or whatever the equivalent in your country is. (For me, coming from Germany, it would be the "Euro Shop". You can buy him a movie DVD or Blu-Ray for a buck, a nice CD, a (cooking) book or if you want to go out of your way and be generous, you could even buy 3 pieces like a shower gel, a body scrub and a body lotion (all of them should look like something really good) and turn them into a gift set.

Handling it that way, will never leave you angry at yourself for having been to generous with gifts, if the relationship falls apart, also it won't rip any kind of hole into your wallet. Spending a dollar for his birthday gift won't hurt your finances.

But also a warning: Never visit these stores with him, so he won't find out how less you spend on him, you never know how he takes it. If he wants to go inside such a shop or talk about it, just frown a bit and make believe that you think they just sell cheap nasty garbage and that you have and would never set foot in there.

Buy gifts only for girlfriends and parents/children. And yourself. That's what I call money well spent ☺️.

Whenever I have been early in a relationship (six months into my current one) I take him to his favorite restaurant and get him one thing that I bought on eBay.

Say he had his eye on a shirt. I'll hunt for it on eBay or find something like it. That way, I didn't spend an exorbitant amount of money while I give them an impression that I did spend a lot. In reality, it's not like I'm not putting in the effort. I am simply engaging in creative accounting so that I don't kick myself later when/if he starts being unappreciative.

For example: I had an ex who worked in IT. He was looking for a set of tools that was in a carrying case and lo and behold I found one with every screw he never knew he needed.

He RAVED about this set and, "Babe, you didn't have to spend all of that money!" It was $10.00 plus four or five dollars shipping.

I talk about him in my post history and how him and his LV buddy moved in together. Whenever he and I got into fights, I always smiled when I thought of that tool set that he thought I spent hundreds on.

Even now with my current boyfriend, his birthday falls on Christmas Eve. He paints miniature figurines as a hobby (think Warhammer and Munchkin), so I bought him extra paint brushes since his are frayed. $1.35 plus $3.95 shipping. Did I mention a quantity discounts...?
