Today is January 6th, internationally known to some as International Day of Zero tolerance for FGM. I have to say it’s disturbing to me that in a country where 80.5% of males have had their genitals mutilated, people are discussing female genital mutilation (FGM) as if its an issue. One article talks about FGM numbers being somewhere around 200 million world wide, while other sources put that number closer to more conservative 52 million. At the same time male genital mutilation (MGM) cases in the United States alone number 130 million. Cases of MGM world wide number somewhere near 1.5 Billion. Note thats billion with a “B” compared to a likely over estimated 200 Million with an “M”. Further, due to strict laws in the United States which ban FGM, cases have becoming increasingly rare, while MGM continues to be practically encouraged in hopitals around the country (and across the globe), largley due to an under-educated populous, and under funded medical systems. Perhaps before another penny be spent on the effort to end the problem of FGM, some effort to eliminate the sexism in the conversation on the larger issue of human genital mutilation be undertaken. Perhaps instead of writing articles like the one I’ve posted below, which paint a picture so radically far from reality, a picture which is both hypocritical and and sexist, an effort to have a real honest discussion of human genital mutilation in general should be had. All genital mutilation is an issue. FGM is but a tiny fraction of the total number of cases when compared to the number of MGM cases, especially in our own country. It’s time the United States takes a stand against this hypocrisy once and for all.
