I do cleaning on a weekly schedule! The only daily things I do every single day are dishes and kitchen tidy.

Then I do each day of the week for different areas like Mondays to deep clean the bathrooms, Tuesday to do laundry’s, Wednesday full sweep and floor clean, Thursday bedrooms and living rooms, etc :)

I divide my chores between ones I do daily, twice a week and weekly.

Daily:

- make the bed

- do the dishes and sanitize the kitchen counters

- pick up the living room and my kids play area

- wipe down the bathroom counters

- do a small load of laundry and put it away the same day

Twice a week:

- vacuum and mop the floors

- dust frequently used surfaces (entertainment center etc)

- clean the bathroom

Weekly:

- wash sheets and towels

- reevaluate the fridge, wipe down shelves and throw away any old food (before I get groceries for the week)

And then there are chores I do when I notice it's time, such as cleaning the windows, reorganizing closets, clean the oven etc.

Daily: tidy, make bed, dishes, kitchen, & trash

Weekly: floors, laundry, bathroom, & reorganize where needed

Monthly: deep clean if necessary

I don’t do the weekly on a specific day it’s based on how much time and energy I have, which one I feel like doing, and what needs it the most.

I still work full time (until I have them babies) so I tidy every day.

On a weekday morning, I make my bed and then go for a run. When I get home, I start the kettle and put away the dishes my partner did the night before after dinner (that’s his favourite and only job lmao).

I then make breakfast and go and sit down at the table. I pick up anything that has been left on the table from the day before and at least put the things into the rooms they’re supposed to be in (there’s a full length mirror in the dining room and I have a habit of changing clothes there and leaving them slung over chairs lol). I then tidy up after myself from making breakfast and rinse my plates.

I then move to the bathroom to… yknow… be clean. After washing my face or showering I wipe down the basin. I will often wipe down the top of the toilet and a little shelf that holds my cosmetics too if they’re getting a bit dusty.

I try to do a load of washing each day so I either hang out the load of washing at this point in the morning or on my lunch break if I am running late.

After work, I come home and walk the dogs. I then pick up our living spaces, change cat litter and vacuum as necessary (cordless vacuum is a life changer). I then make dinner and pack away my ingredients. After dinner my partner does dishes and I pick up the living area (dog toys, empty glasses, remotes, etc) and make the couches look presentable again by fluffing pillows and folding blankets. And repeat.

On weekends I usually go in zones. It’s pretty easy and only takes a few hours since I keep the house tidy all week. I wipe down surfaces, do a big vacuum (with the lines in the carpet drool) and mop the tiled areas. Ill also properly clean the bathroom which isn’t a big deal when I do it regularly. I’ll also wash the bedsheets every weekend. Any big or messy jobs (i.e. gardening, hosing down the outdoor area) are saved for the weekend too.

Anyway, that’s how I always keep a pretty clean house. It’s always at least presentable enough that I would happily welcome in surprise guests. My skirting boards might get a bit dusty but I’m not going to put my life on hold to make sure they’re dust free!

Cleaning is a skill that is really only possible when you're house is in order. Here's what I would suggest:

Read Mario Kondo's "The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up" to begin the process of tidying. It's short, fun, and you can finish it in a few hours. Basically, most people have too many things for their house/home/space to be in order. This makes keeping your home clean nearly impossible. You need to reduce the amount of things you own to a reasonable level, then choose a space for all of your things. Only after this does cleaning become simple, easy, and sustainable.

The tidying process can take awhile (about 6 months) but once you've fully understood the process, keeping your home clean becomes second nature and actually rewarding and joyful.

One room at a time. Work my way from the back of the house to the front. Certain chores (clean fridge, steam floors, wash sheets, do laundry, wipe baseboards, scrub shower) done on a weekly or bi weekly schedule that’s on my whiteboard

Cleaning is a whole lot easier imo if you clean as you go or clean in short spurts. For example, get out of bed - make the bed/strip the sheets and bring them down to the washing machine if they need changing. Make food, wipe the surfaces afterwards. If you have a few minutes spare and you notice something needs a clean, clean it there and then. I don't like to block out deep cleaning time so most things will be ad hoc daily cleaning as opposed to weekly/monthly cleans, but that's just how I prefer to do it.

Eventually spiral out of control and admit I need help?

I work full time, he works full time, we have a 4 yo and 18mo. I was doing basic pickup around the house, then one big cleaning day every weekend. As the girls are getting older, it's a little easier to clean with them around, but it's also getting harder as they make more messes in more places then I can be. I try to get them to help but it's not very successful!

Overall doing a big room clean once on the weekend was working for me, with nightly dishes/kitchen clean up, and laundry every other day. It takes about 2-3 weeks for things to devolve to "must clean again" But in a huge house with lots of rooms, and more rooms needing more, more often, I've started with a cleaning service twice a month.

I work a lot and my husband is also extremely busy, and now I'm all about maintenance. I don't really have to do weekend cleaning sessions anymore, because I've gotten in the routine of doing things as I see them. If the bathroom sink looks a little dirty and I don't have a meeting soon, I pull out a sponge and clean it quick. If I'm waiting for water to boil, I look around the kitchen and dining room for anything that needs done. Putting groceries away, I have a rag and cleaner with me to wipe things down. I think it works for me because when I try to set 'cleaning times', I sort of dread it haha. It also gets me up and moving during the day, which I can forget about sometimes (I'm a software engineer....I get sucked into the computer for too long sometimes!)

As far as things I almost ALWAYS do daily, those would be cooking dinner and cleaning the kitchen, emptying the dishwasher, putting away laundry, and starting the robot vaccuum. Everything else I more or less do when I notice them.

Sidenote - the best thing I ever did was get rid of stuff and not bring in unnecessary stuff. That changed my need to clean drastically. Can't let dishes pile up when we only have 4 of them, or let the fridge get gross when we make sure to only buy groceries that we know we'll eat, etc.
