An interview with UK psychologist Nichola Graham-Kevan where she discusses the realities of domestic abuse, the problems with ideology in the field, the difficulties that occur for male victims and the limitations of the government's feminist-informed approach. She also discusses the Duluth Model, its limitations and how adherence to its principals stops better evidence-based programs being developed that could help abusive people with their problems. The interview also challenges the idea of abusive behaviour as a patriarchal concept as 50% of abuse is mutual and the behaviour is typically driven by trauma, emotional dysregulation and impulsivity issues.

Very interesting.

I like how she discussed the progression of the dv narrative where the argument has transformed from "men abuse women more than the reverse" to "when men abuse women it's more dangerous" to the modern argument that "women are subjectively more fearful and therefore domestic violence against women is worse".

And this is just based on a gender difference between men and women, so it's basically meaningless.

I also like her take on control and "emotional labor" in relationships. She doesn't call it this but feminists complain all the time that women have to figure things out, plan everything, and tell everyone what to do, which they call emotional labor. And my response is always, "stop trying to be in charge and then that emotional labor will go away".

What a burden on women – we’ve got to be right all the time. It’s got to be our way. I don’t think it’s fair on women, that women feel they have to manage their partner, or they have a right to. Take that job off the women, and let the guys manage themselves more, and everyone will be happier. Women don't need to control other people's lives and please don't tell is that's our job because it's too much to ask us to do.

(Emphasis added).

I think this is important because it leads strait into patterns of abuse that are common for men to experience. There's really not much of a difference between having a controlling or nagy wife, and being in an emotionally and verbally abusive relationship. And the feminist play on this is that it's actually women who are victims, because women have to be the boss, which is just so incredibly backwards and toxic.

I have one criticism though because in one section she says that men don't go to the doctor "unless their leg is falling off".

There's a theory that one reason for that is because men just don't have the time, energy, and flexibility that women have to go to the doctor.

Women are less likely to work, less likely to work full time, and when they do, they choose careers and jobs that are more flexible. And the result is that women are actually better able to go to the doctor than men are.

One reason we know this is a factor is because retired men go to the doctor just as often as retired women do. So when men have time available to them to go to the doctor, they do actually end up going.

I don't want to say that this is the only factor, but this is an important point in the context of therapy. If you want to talk about different mental health utilization between men and women, then we need to look at time and flexibility as factors, and not just a man's willingness to go. Especially because therapy is a long term commitment with regular appointments throughout the year. If a man has trouble blocking time off for an annual doctor's visit, imagine how hard it would be to block off time monthly for regular therapy sessions.

This is a factor that I've yet to see investigated in the mental health context, and I feel like it's potentially very important and something that we need more awareness about.

What a profoundly revealing piece of data that is never mentioned, since it simply and elegantly refutes the detestable idea that men are entirely at fault for their worse health and face no systemic barriers to accessing healthcare.

I haven't made it into my therapist's office since January and we are supposed to meet biweekly. I just haven't had the time to do so and whenever I have, she's booked up. I'm basically straight up crisising right now but I know I just have to suck it up and deal with it until I can go talk to her and maybe find another psych for a second round of antidepressants...

A lot of women are socialized that men are dumb, stupid men, women are right, women are the experts in emotions. This idea that women are right, and the deviation from that is wrong. If the guy doesn’t agree with you - on any number of issues in the house - then he is wrong and you are correct. That’s damaging for girls and women, because when you are right, and people are deliberately not behaving in the way they should, because you are correct, then naturally you get righteously annoyed, and try to coerce them and cajole them into doing what is right.

I like this comment from her, as she points to the "Women are Wiser" trope as being toxic. Very strange for a supposed patriarchal society to think of men as being intellectually and mentally inferior to women.

But then...

What a burden on women – we’ve got to be right all the time. It’s got to be our way. I don’t think it’s fair on women, that women feel they have to manage their partner, or they have a right to. Take that job off the women, and let the guys manage themselves more, and everyone will be happier. Women don’t need to control other people’s lives and please don’t tell us that’s our job because it’s too much to ask us to do.

She positions this as a primary burden on women rather than on men. I hate to do that meme, but:

"Men portrayed as boorish morons and thus women refuse to listen them, women most affected".

I feel like in context she doesn't mean it exactly like that.

It might be a little tongue in cheek, or it could be more along the lines of what I was saying earlier: if that is legitimately a problem for some women, they do have the option of just not doing it. Basically pointing out that it would help women and men both. Even if they ultimately do it to themselves.

It didn't really sound like she was joking.

I didn't really get that from her.

She's says that a lot of women are emotionally abusing or controlling their boyfriend/husband because they were socialized to think that men were dumb. She doesn't condemn the women who do that but instead put the blame on the social norms that allow them to do that, thus removing any responsibility from the abusive women.

In a sense, she's implying that those kinds of women have good intentions, but are too blinded by the whole "Women are Wiser" trope that society has taught them to realize the bad things they're doing.

If anything, that paragraph seems to be reminiscent of feminist arguments rather than MRA/Egalitarian arguments.

It didn't really sound like she was joking.

It seemed to be about women complaining about emotional labor, and men not helping with the baby after doing mommy-blocking by wanting it absolutely done one exact way (and considering that everything else is wrong).

There was a lot of sexist stuff of that kind in her article (she also implied some idiotic stuff about evolutionary selection and its relations to culture etc which is very common with certain Anglo types), but because she said a few things people here like while being female she gets worshiped here.

Really quite telling.

Again , very weird from a patriarchal society to push the idea that “women are wiser”

[–]_name_of_the_user_ 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's how I took it as well. Every gender issue effects both sexes, this one is no different. We can quibble over who's more effected by which issues, but in the end what matters is fixing it.

[–]Zinziberruderalis 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

She likely came with gynocentrism pre-installed, moreover the audience for popular psychology (even about men) is mostly female.

[–]ThunderClap448 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Let's be real - people are vile, and that's just the nature. Men are stronger than women, so when they abuse, they go that route as that's the most harm they can do.
Women on the other hand more often rely on verbal/mental abuse, because we as men are fairly easy to tear down due to the fucking MANY insecurities we have, but hide.

If women had the physical means, we would see so many men at the ERs

I'd add to this that part of the problem there is the pressure men face regarding working more hours to maximize income - even if a man might have a job that has flexibility, the pressure is there to not utilize it in fear of being seen as not working hard enough leading to fear of losing said job or missing out on the next promotion because of it.

Personally that's been an issue for myself.

Brilliant article.

I recall clips from BBC Mongrels featuring Destiny, the bpd Afghan hound. Look up just a little tap on the nose it is a parody of lily Allen's style involving destiny and her committing domestic abuse on her canine boyfriend.
