I was 7 years old when “The Pursuit of Happyness” came out. Granted it was a beautiful film, I didn’t realize how much of it was fabricated. “King Richard” is not the first Will Smith movie he’s starred in where the character he plays was not so inspiring in real life. I wish more people knew.

I didn’t know any of the background, but I remember being skeptical of how they kept trying to demonize his son’s mother.

I remember thinking “okay, so you don’t like your ex’s new boyfriend, and maybe he’s not great, but do you think living in homeless shelters is going to be a better option for your son?” I was also wondering why he was still going after an unpaid internship when he and his son were literally living on the street. Like, my man. Now is the time to do what thousands of single mothers do every day, and shelve your pride so that you can work a couple of unglamorous jobs that pay the bills, so you can provide for your child. At least until you have a place to live.

Richard Williams left his first family and his children were forced to grow up in poverty. Why is this man being celebrated? Because he could properly monetise off his second family, but not his first? A great man would have taken care (at least financially) of his first family as well, instead of discarding them like trash.

I’m sorry, I had to delete and repost since I forgot the important 3rd slide that highlighted low value behavior when he cheated on his first wife (Sherry) after her miscarriage 💔. The narrative in the 2006 film seriously had a lot of men talking shit about Chris Gardner’s wife/gf being selfish for not staying with him during his unpaid internship. Men blamed her and made her out to be a heartless b*tch just for not believing in him. What the movie fails to address is how fucking stressful motherhood had to be for Jackie Medina providing all on her own and the possible domestic abuse. Especially when she knew Chris didn’t have the best track record with drugs and infidelity while he was with his first wife, Sherry. It’s inspiring he was able to work hard and get himself out of poverty.

However, I never liked the way they demonized the woman involved in his life, while painting him as an angel despite him clearly being flawed too if that makes any sense? I’m disgusted by how he treated his first wife, Sherry Dyson. It’s also clear from this research that Jackie never wanted her son to be homeless. I think in the way the film portrayed things, they made it seem like she totally abandoned her son and didn’t care for him at all.

For the first 4 months Chris was at his unpaid internship, she was taking care of their son. After those 4 months, she agreed to let Chris take their son in and he didn’t bother to be truthful about him not making enough money to provide properly. His son was homeless with him without her knowledge. Despite not getting back together, she also eventually ended up taking care of their son more and another daughter that was born after he became successful while he went on his business ventures.

I love how even the real story glosses over medical school like it’s just a hoop to jump through, implying he already knew enough 🙄. Movies always change the story. Always.
