We don’t know what the situation was before the camera started rolling. They could have been sitting together for all we know.
He wasn’t being physically violent and as it turns out he let her go in short order with nobody being physically harmed. Any intervention might have escalated the issue and resulted in violence and physical harm.

I don’t blame her for being frightened, but it doesn’t mean someone intervening and escalating the situation would have been the right thing.

Well I will give the commentator one thing - New York is a pretty good example of societal decay.

I would be interested to see that commentator's broadcast history and see how many rants and stories she's done about "toxic masculinity" and those sorts of things...

As for the situation in the video:

The issue for bystanders is that they are all well aware that whether a person is described as a "good Samaritan" or a "vigilante" pretty much depends on who is looking at their actions and what their agenda is - and NYC is upside down world with respect to this sort of thing, compared to most of the rest of the USA.

If some guy in NYC had rolled up on that guy who grabbed the woman and was assaulting her, and punched the assaulter out, I guarantee that the "good Samaritan" would have been arrested AT A MINIMUM. If that happened in Atlanta the cops would escort the Samaritan home with a pat on the back.

If I were on that train in NYC, the risks to me in terms of legal action (criminal or civil) for acting to assist that woman would have been my primary concern.

I am a law abiding citizen and getting a permit to carry ANY sort of weapon in NYC - even a pocket knife is next to impossible for people who aren't LEOs, body guards, and armored car drivers, etc., so I would not be armed, not even with the pocket knife that goes with me almost everywhere here at home. I would also know that I could find myself at a significant disadvantage in any altercation if the thug had some sort of weapon - since I already recognize that guy as someone who does not follow the law.

All in all, I'd say those bystanders were compliant with NYC policy and practice for the treatment of citizens - this is perhaps something that belongs in the Malicious Compliance subreddit.

Legitimate question:

If the Supreme Court ruled that the police - whose literal job it is to protect and serve - are under no obligation to protect people in danger (thinking of Uvalde where children were dying)...

...then why is there an onus on unarmed men - who have no connection to this woman - to risk their own health, safety, and wellbeing?

The way the snoody anchor calls the men "cowardly" for refusing to jump in and risk their own necks is disgusting to me. If this is the equality you wanted so badly, does that mean the women on the train are ALSO cowardly for not jumping in? Or is it just because we're men and we're "disposable" to you?

and i know all this is going to be theorising on what about, but for the record, this reporter lady totally expects men to interfere if the guy harassing the victim was actually a woman too. even if a woman caused it, she'd still put responsibility on the men to interfere and not women. the logic of "but it was a woman doing it to another woman" doesn't hold up to reporter lady, yet its fine when men are oppressed?

In my country we recently had a similar case. A gang of 9, 7 males & 2 females, attacked 2 women at barbecue. No bystanders physically helped, as these were really big dangerous guys, but 1 or 2 did call police. Then a female celebrity called all men in the country as cowards that only dare to use violence against women. She herself years before had injured her ex-husband with a cooking knife. Under her influence, many women also started to blame men for assaulting women, ignoring the fact both men and women could be perpetrators and victims of violence too. It was by nature a pure case of violence but women switched the focus to a narrative of gender war. It’s just that very kind of gender war that has stopped men from helping women, by making us feel totally unhelpful to them. So men replied “Ok. Girls help girls then.”

I believe it's *supposed* to be the police's job to help people like that woman there. But the supreme court decided the cops don't have to do their jobs. It's not the public's job either.

Why should anyone help anyone else? You risk getting hurt and/or killed. Plus that woman probably would of complained about anything you did. So it's all *downsides*.
