Russia sends fathers who don't pay child support to fight in Ukraine

Russian military recruiters are targeting fathers who neglect to pay child maintenance and sending them off to fight in Ukraine.

Margarita Simonyan, the influential chief of the RT television network, at the weekend confirmed reports that officials overseeing the mobilisation drive had answered women’s requests to conscript their ex-husbands or boyfriends who had not paid child maintenance.

Ms Simonyan said she recently met the mayor of Sochi, who reported progress on the mobilisation drive that Vladimir Putin announced last month.

“He said he first took the list of strategically important enterprises to make sure their staff are not conscripted - and then asked court bailiffs for a list of notorious non-payers of alimony, people who won’t do their duty by their children - they were sent out,” Ms Simonyan said.

“Now they will not only do their duty by their children by making the pay-outs from their allowance but also do their duty by their homeland.”

President Putin last month shocked Russia by announcing a partial military mobilisation to bolster the Kremlin’s forces in Ukraine that have suffered staggering battlefield losses.

Men too old or ill grabbed by recruiters

The mobilisation drive sparked an uproar, with even men who were too old or too ill being grabbed by military recruiters and sent off to the front lines with minimal training and substandard equipment.

Sergey Mironov, the leader of a pro-Kremlin party, last month said he had been fielding requests from women pleading with him to have the fathers of their children mobilised.

Russian celebrities have also joined the drive.

Music producer Iosif Prigozhin, a father of six, last week called on men to be “responsible” and pay alimony or face the call-up, while Dana Borisova, a former Playboy model, went public about her ex-husband, urging the authorities to conscript him.

This news hit the frontpage last week and it’s honestly so dreadful that I didn’t even bother opening the thread, because the world is so fucked up I’m sure there would be plenty of people supporting it, if not the majority.

It’s not only another case where men are harmed by the choices of those who hold institutional power, it’s also about average citizens putting the life of these men on the line by their own choice and possibly sentencing them to death or mutilation. That makes it much more fucked up.

And it’s even more ironic that this comes up in a time where female bodily autonomy is such a hot topic. They obviously assume that all of these men tricked these women into bearing their kids, then bailed on them when they got bored. They’ll never stop to consider that many of these women lied about being on the pill. That many of these guys were unemployed. That they were raped and never wanted a child in the first place.

SS : This article creeped me out. The duty to the country and to the children are seen as the same. These men having given up their imposed duties as fathers are expected to pay with their lives.

I understand the need for two parents to support the growth of kids even if I think the state should step in if one of the two parents doesn't want to be a parent. But sending people to their deaths for a moral digression and their sex leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.
