I hope they make another list next year! We had a blast last night at the pub reading it. 9/10 comedy

[–]hehimCA 27 points28 points29 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Unreal. These people are so out of touch.

[–]OldSamVimes 13 points14 points15 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That list was so hilarious.

Not sure if that was their intention. LOL

Fact: in the mid 20th century, women were the ones who invented saying “guys” gender neutrally like the way we used to say “folks”

Look it up

Guy Fawkes Appears to be the origin. If you search on something like "origin of the word guy", every article is similar. Unfortunately they're all parroting the same "It's not appropriate" kind of BS.

Seriously, these people are just looking for something to be offended by.

I'm just going to drop this here for some consideration:

It was intended that when Newspeak had been adopted once and for all and Oldspeak forgotten, a heretical thought—that is, a thought diverging from the principles of Ingsoc—should be literally unthinkable, at least so far as thought is dependent on words.

Its vocabulary was so constructed as to give exact and often very subtle expression to every meaning that a Party member could properly wish to express, while excluding all other meanings and also the possibility of arriving at them by indirect methods. This was done partly by the invention of new words, but chiefly by eliminating undesirable words and by stripping such words as remained of unorthodox meanings, and so far as possible of all secondary meanings whatever.

To give a single example. The word FREE still existed in Newspeak, but it could only be used in such statements as ‘This dog is free from lice’ or ‘This field is free from weeds’. It could not be used in its old sense of ‘politically free’ or ‘intellectually free’ since political and intellectual freedom no longer existed even as concepts, and were therefore of necessity nameless.

Anyone got a copy please? It's not available to us in the old world

Yeah, probably another site afraid of GDPR.

Men in the west= the Jews in Nazi Germany

Not a good comparison. 6 million murdered. Inappropriate comparison, I’m not trying to offend you just point out that it’s not really ok to compare that.

“American” was deemed to be “imprecise language,” and the EHLI said “U.S. citizen” is preferred. “This term (American) often refers to people from the United States only, thereby insinuating that the US is the most important country in the Americas (which is actually made up of 42 countries),” Stanford EHLI said.

The US is absolutely the most important country in the Americas. Arguably in the world too. To say otherwise is just burying your head in the sand.

[–]mikesteane -1 points0 points1 point 3 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

The people of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland object to English people using the term England as if it were the whole of the UK, and understandably so. To argue that England is the most important country of the four, which it is by most metrics, is not only irrelevant but adds to the insult. (Disclosure: I am AEAB, assigned English at birth. )

[–]KochiraJin 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's a different situation. Here they are labeling "American" as imprecise language for something that is objectively true. Your example is more like referring to Americans as Californians.

Good to see that our universities of higher learning are spending their time seeking out ways to combat climate change, cancer, and public health! Oh... wait... What?

[–]Reasonable_Listen514 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The so called prestigious universities are becoming memes. They push nonsense now.

[–]UnmutualOne 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Can we get rid of “bruh” then?

[+]mikesteane -22 points-21 points-20 points 3 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

Actually, I agree that US citizens should not use the term "American" as if it referred exclusively to them. But to me it's more a matter of using language accurately, which is part of being able to think clearly.

[–]Bosspotatoness 15 points16 points17 points 3 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Linguist here, if the entirety of the planet uses "American" to refer to citizens of the United States, that word means citizens of the United States. Dictating what words should and should not be used is not only ridiculous, it's futile. People have been trying to get us to stop splitting infinitives and saying "ain't" and nobody gives a fuck.

Real linguists describe language, not prescribe it. This is linguistics 101. And if every speaker I know uses "you guys" as a 2nd person plural, then it's a valid 2nd person plural. This is the same shit as trying to prescribe non-gendered grammar onto gendered language. You can't control it no matter how hard you try.

[+]mikesteane -17 points-16 points-15 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Odd that you should tell people it's ridiculous to try to dictate what words should and should not be used and then go on to define yourself as a "real linguist" as if you have the right to define who is or is not a linguist.

[–]Bosspotatoness 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I can't tell if you're being facetious but I'm literally in my fourth year into a linguistics degree. It's not so much gatekeeping as it is a description of my career and qualifications.

[–]Jerzeem 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

So... would you say your definition of 'real linguist' was descriptive rather than prescriptive?

[–]Bosspotatoness 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Sure. In a descriptive sense, because most people consider a linguist to be someone in the field of linguistics, then yes, I am a real linguist. Also pretty much any credible linguist follows descriptivism. Kinda like asking if a "real physicist" is someone who believes F=m*a.

[–]mikesteane -1 points0 points1 point 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No, it was an attempt to claim authority for his opinions. Nothing more, nothing less.

[–]IoSonCalaf 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Let me guess, you’re from Canada?

[–]mikesteane -2 points-1 points0 points 3 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

No, I was assigned English at Birth but later transitioned to being Australian.

[–]mostlydisposeable 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

as an Englishman I've always made sure to call them "Yankee" (espacily if they're from the south)

[–]elebrin 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Sure, but the name of our country is nine syllables, if you come up with something based on that it'll be too long and nobody will use it commonly.

Language evolves. If it didn’t we would all still be speaking like Chaucer. David Foster Wallace is rolling in his grave right now. And I wonder what Chomsky thinks of this.

[–]ThatEconGuy 11 points12 points13 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Language evolving over time is not the same as moralizing busybodies telling/lecturing you what is and isn’t offensive. Please stop doing SJWs bidding by allowing them to manipulatively change definitions at will for stupid political reasons. And stop helping them lie about it by spreading the myth that this is a natural language progression.

[–]Shuddemell666 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Language evolution should be organic, not societally enforced by the woke scolds.

[–]Sortofachemist 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Telling you'd actually give a fuck what someone who justifies the 9/11 attacks, defends the Pol Pot regime, and genuinely feels America is in need of "denazification" thinks...
