As someone who's dealt with infertility, I don't think there's much threat of large numbers of men paying six figures to embark on an emotionally greuling surrogacy journey. Furthermore, it's not like the majority of single moms have become so by choice and that's far simpler. Most people don't want to parent alone.

If anything, we might see more platonic parents, friends partnering as parents instead of waiting for a romantic relationship. I don't think that would be the worst parenting model, but it would be pretty far from the best. Children deserve a mother and a father who love and respect one another, who have committed to each other for life.

Part of being a good parent is putting your kids' needs ahead of your own desires, and kids need both their mom and their dad to thrive. Being a single dad through surrogacy is no different than being a single mom through a sperm donor. In both cases a person has decided ahead of time that their child will have to live with the painful fallout of growing up outside of a family and not knowing who their other parent is. The parent has decided to alleviate their own emotional suffering by creating a child who will have to suffer emotionally instead. There are also the ethical concerns surrounding exploiting low income women in third world countries as hired wombs and the need to discard several dozen developing children prior to implantation for each one child who is selected to be impanted and allowed to develop into a full term baby. Responding to the epidemic of single parenthood by intentionally creating more single parent homes would be a mistake that only makes the problem worse.

My cousin (M 40+ architect) adopted from a developing country. I know three more single men who adopted, and an equal number of women.

Single men will NEVER want to be alone with a child lol in huge numbers, the odd man here and there...sure. In general, men tolerate children because it is (usually) the price of access to safe, consistent sex. Whereas women tolerate men because it's (usually) the price of a safe, stable environment for children. Men - on their own - aren't pining away for children...they want a woman. Likewise women - on their own - aren't pining away for men...they want babies.
