Because men are denied an identity (worth as an individual) apart from their ability to do useful work, invent, and take risks for the benefit of other people. They have to earn their identity, and can lose it at any time, and are always on the lookout for ways to continue to earn their place.

Women are granted their worth as an individual automatically. They are therefore not nearly as motivated to put in the long, tedious, and risky commitments of time and energy to achieve creatively.

In Baumeister's "Is there anything good about men", he offers the example of the development of jazz. A musical revolution, carried out by poor black men trying to earn their place in the world in the aftermath of the civil war. At the same time, there were lots of middle class women with access to musical instruments, leisure, training, and hardly any composers of note to be found in their ranks.

Don't really know why but it is true. For ten thousand years almost, women had one industry they dominated completely ; light industrial textiles (spinning, making cloth, making items from the cloth). During that time almost no advances were made (exception: spinning wheel invented around 14th century) and the few we do know who did them were by men (eg. spinning jenny). Compare that to any other (male dominated) industry over the same period.

I think it's because of the differences in our brains. Male brains are probably more equipped to problem solve and apply intellect to the outside world of stuff. Women's brains are more designed to be process social relationships and emotions. That's just my opinion because I really don't think nurture can explain the massive difference in inventions or discoveries between men and women. That doesn't mean men are better, it's just our brains are different.

It's pretty simple, really. There are more far more men than women currently working or studying in engineering related fields, especially mechanical and electrical engineering. As well, there are more men working in design and development proportionally, even within those fields.
