Okay, I'm going to start off this post by saying I'm a feminist. When I say that, I mean that I believe in fighting for equality for both genders, and as such I am also an MRA. I don't agree with the so-called 'feminists' who have completely lost the point of the whole movement and are bat-shit crazy.
I enjoy browsing this subreddit because it gives me a different perspective, I don't agree with EVERYTHING that's on here, but I agree and sympathize with most of it (There are crazies in every movement after all). I think the commonly agreed upon MR points are valid and important issues, ones that we should all be fighting for in conjunction with various WR issues.
One movement that really stands out for me is the "My body/my choice/my wallet/my future" paradigm. The thought that anyone would be forced to take responsibility for an accidental child is downright puritan, especially when there are safe and effective methods of ending an unwanted pregnancy. Kids aren't a fucking joke, kids are life-changing commitments.
I wanted to share a story with you. It's about two girls I know, both of them got pregnant around the same time, one was 19 and the other was 20. The 19 year old got pregnant when her condom broke while having sex with her casual fuck buddy. She had huge issues with deciding what to do with the pregnancy, and in the end decided to keep it. The father insisted he wanted nothing to do with the kid, she sued him for child support (which his parents will probably have to pay). The 20 year old got pregnant because her and her boyfriend used withdrawal (PSA: That shit ain't effective), she wanted to get an abortion but couldn't afford it. Her boyfriend refused to help her pay for it, but also didn't want the baby. She went through with the pregnancy and is now suing him for child support as well.
Now, as I mentioned, both these girls and these guys are actually people I know. As such, I find it very conflicting to form an opinion. In the first case I think it's pretty clear, forcing this guy to pay for a child he never wanted isn't okay. The second case is a little less clear-cut. I have a lot of conflicting opinions on it, especially given the fact that neither parents wanted the kid. The mom had, initially after realizing she couldn't afford an abortion, decided to put the baby up for adoption. She changed her mind very late in her pregnancy, she understandably grew very attached to the thing that was growing inside her. I hate that guy though. I hate him for constantly complaining about condoms until she agreed to not using them anymore, I hate him for putting her through a pregnancy she didn't want when he could have afforded to help out (He works in a posh restaurant, he makes the amount she needed from him in one night, he bought himself a new macbook in her 4th month because he drunkenly spilled beer on his old one), I hate him for putting her in a situation where she had to drop out of college and get a job to support the child she loves. I think he deserves to pay every penny of child support, despite that fact that he didn't want the child.
But I like to hear different perspectives on things before I make judgements, what's your opinion?
