So why are dad's overprotective about their daughters dating but not their sons?

Men tend to be more protective of daughters than their sons. I don't buy the whole "because men know what guys are thinking" argument. When I was young, I wasn't only interested in sex. I was interested in sex AND companionship/love/validation. I didn't consider myself a threat to daughters then, and I still don't think of my young self as a threat to daughters.

Full Disclosure: I don't have a daughter, and my opinion may well change if I do. But for now, should a father want his daughter to have healthy and positive sex life - just not want to hear any details?

Am I the only one who thinks mothers are similarly protective of their sons in a different way? They dress you like a dork and train you to be as beta as possible under the belief that it will make you a good husband. They may do this with the best intentions but realistically it repels women throughout your youth like a damn dog whistle.

I think it's an artifact of our culture.

It goes back to the concept that men are defined by actions, while women are defined by their image.

A woman who has a bad reputation, or gets used becomes less "valuable" in the eyes of suitors, but socially as well.

Since women are seen to have hypo-agency, it is up to a family member to look after her interests until she can do so.

So, that means the girl's brothers and father looks after her until she acquires her "other half", who will take over that role in her life.

That's the traditional view.. It's also of note that this isn't just men hedging in on the daughter. It also affects them greatly, because failure to keep their daughter's conscience clean is a black mark on them as well.

It can be a devastating blow to a man's ego to know that he failed his child. For a son, it means not raising him to take care of himself. For a daughter, it means to directly take care of her and ensure that she selected a man that will have her interests at heart.

All that having been said, I think that fathers who teach their daughters as we traditionally raise our sons (That is, to be in charge of their own lives and to have self reliance) do them a huge service over the fathers that are always there for their daughters.

It's a shame that more daughters don't know the real empowerment that comes from self direction and true mastery of their own lives.

I think that's just a myth. Both boys and girls need to be wary of pregnancy but boys don't have any choice in the matter so they are more at risk.

Daughters also tend to select poorly. It isn't just that "hurr durr all guys are like that," it is that they tend to choose the guys who are like that. Teenagers, both boys and girls, also tend to be hormonal messes. And if the guy does knock her up and take a runner, it's the girl's parents who will be stuck with the cost.

I will say this though; I got beaten as a child and my female sibling(s) did not. My mother engaged in proxy abuse of me, but not of my female sibling(s). My mother also committed gross neglect and abandonment against me, but not my female sibling(s). So, there is certainly some veracity to favoring of daughters and being more protective of them than sons.

It's not just dads. PEOPLE are less compassionate / supportive / protective / kind / towards men & boys period. It's not just dads and it's not just daughters.
