I love it when people totally ignore/try to erase the sociological causes for most of these phenomena. No, it's not society and the way it sees men as a means to an end, rather than an end in itself. It's not society, women and men too, that push men, as a whole, to see their worth based on how much economic value they can command. No, it's not our culture that teaches men that they're only valued when they're doing something for someone else (and thus they get lost in their search for ever-increasing measures of 'success' in whatever their field is...if they have one at all, in this economy). Nope. Certainly not any of that. It's because men aren't good at cursive writing.

I wonder if this is linked at all to the phenomenon (if that's the right word to describe it) that I learned about in a sociology class: men are more likely to die soon after their wife dies as opposed to women dieing after their husband dies. The hypothesis for why is that the wife is typically the man's link to a social network, so after she dies he gets lonely, sick and dies. But the woman has her social network to support her after her husband dies so she's not as lonely.

Of course men are lonely. They have been turned into irrelevant cast offs. They have been kicked out of the family while former wives ran off with their children. A man is only a part of the family at the forbearance of a woman. Unless he just caves and lets her run things, sometimes if he does, he finds his reputation besmirched and himself kicked to the curb while his children are turned against him and he is impoverished. Suicide? What else do you expect from people who are unneeded and unwanted? Half the families now have female heads of household. What do you think became of the men?

What a Bunch of Whiney Men There Are Here Today! "Unrealistic Expectations" out there for men, huh? Why don't you try being female! Have you ever had your intellect questioned because of your breast size? NO! Have you ever been told by members of your own family that "you should marry the first person who asks because you're not pretty"--"pretty" meaning you don't have a Barbie Doll figure? NO! Do you make 70 cents on the dollar for the same work that the guy next to you makes? NO! You pay less for hair cuts, dry cleaning, doctor's visits, clothing, insurance premiums. I could go on but why bother! Do you have an entire political party trying to keep you at home "barefoot and pregnant"? NO! SO STOP WHINING! Women have been putting up with discrimination and sexism since the beginning of patriarchial societies. You reep what you sow, Gentlemen. Don't ask women to feel sorry for you . . .
