Disgusting image from a BBC report of the women's march. A little boy sitting beneath a sign saying "The problem begins and ends with men." What sort of society have we created where a mother thinks it is ok to subject her son to this hatred ?

Refuge is the site which says in the mens section.

"You may be visiting this site because you are, or think you might be, experiencing domestic violence"

And

"You may also be visiting this site because you think you may be an abuser"

No language using "think" or about being an abuser on the women's section.

[–]kyzeboy 311 points312 points313 points 5 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Dude thats horrifying, this needs to be in the article and higher upvoted.

I was struggling if the female-focus is grounded in the statistics, which claim that atleast 8 out of 10 recorded isses are against females.

But with this information, it seems more likely they intentionally excluded male victims. And further, intentionally excluded females as abusers.

I fear that this kind of sexism goes unnoticed too much.

[–]01ARayOfSunlight 33 points34 points35 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Have you ever heard of the Duluth model?

I think the anti-male bias is quite intentional.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Before her death Ellen Pence was shunned by the feminist movement and was not welcome in the refuges she founded. All because she openly discussed the fact that women can be abusers

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The truth is, women are more prone to initiate domestic violence, and men are more apt to respond to physical antagonization and so be viewed as perpetrators rather than as victims defending themselves.

As for their loss of funding, when you write a grant, you have to make 100% sure that you meet the criteria for the grant. If a community health endowment says "Must provide services to all" that means to everybody. If program directors fail to meet the grant's stipulations, they can be held responsible for repayment of funds dispersed or drawn down to-date.

This won't end well for that particular girl's club. Their directors may have to rob Peter to pay Paul and, if they do, that'll land them in even more hot water.

[–]Cj09bruno 24 points25 points26 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

if my memory is correct if you are impartial and account for the different kinds of domestic abuse (women more likely to mentally abuse for example) its something like 60% men 40% women as perpetrators

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's actually 60/40 in terms of physical abuse. The difference is, women aren't as strong as men and so most of these cases go unnoticed, unreported, or--and this is what is truly sad--male victims are often blamed as perpetrators when they fight back to defend themselves.

[–]kyzeboy 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah i just cropped the info, but you are correct

[–]lucia-pacciola 15 points16 points17 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Maybe they don't expect abusive women to be visiting the site at all?

"You're a dude, so maybe in a moment of clarity you're here to get help with your abusive urges."

"You're a lady, so if you're an abuser we're not expecting any clarity from you or any desire to get help. Let's get real: We're not going to see you visiting our website, are we?"

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points12 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Wow this is udder bullshit. 40% of all domestic violence is perpetrated my women. Guess it’s ok when a woman does it.

[–]feluto 802 points803 points804 points 5 years ago (78 children) | Copy Link

I don't understand what kind of monster would refuse to help someone in an abusive situation purely because of gender

Its twice as confusing to realise that they without a doubt had this issue come up and chose to do nothing about it time and time again, instead of making sure everyone has a safe way out they'd rather only protect women even if it costs 5 million pounds. Clown world!

[–]dangerzonebjj 406 points407 points408 points 5 years ago (19 children) | Copy Link

My father was abused constantly through the 80s by an ex wife. She beat him up, put holes in doors when he locked himself away to avoid her. Slashed his tires etc. Cops didn't care and treated it like a joke.

In college I had an ex girlfriend show up to my dorm room and tell me if I didn't make her cum she'd tell the school I raped her. I was too scared to go to the cops so I was raped. I went to a rape support group on campus for help processing and I was screamed at to leave. Got a therapist I couldn't afford and she told me I "wasn't really raped".

I'm not denying men are often awful to women but I can tell you from personal experience that women have just as much potential to be predators of all kinds.

[–]LockP1ck3r 158 points159 points160 points 5 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

Men are not “often” abusive toward women. It’s more publicized because no one cares when men get abused; they’re told to “man up” instead.

And it also goes to show that no one cares about men being abused, since this group was ostracized for catering to women and not gays and transformers.

Not a word about men.

[–]Chefboiardii 59 points60 points61 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Depending on the branch, most roles are not combat, and the military does indeed need people who can be organized like a secretary, the same as any organization.

I’m whole deadass homo, but definitely come across as a hetero by the way I act/talk/dress, and the amount of times I have been sexually assaulted by woman after telling them I’m gay at bars and then afterwards they proceed to ask me to add them on snap is uncanny. I think the most ironic one was a girl who got my snap from a mutual the next day (she didn’t know what happened), and within a week her story was her ranting about how men are so dangerous, that that’s why woman have to travel together, that men don’t experience sexual assault like woman do blah blah blah. Also not to mention the CDC discussing that 48.xx% of reported sexual assault was by men and the other 51.xx% was reported by women when they did the last survey in 2016, but that is never talked about.

Also not saying woman don’t experience SA or invalidating it, but I shouldn’t be more scared to be out on the dance floor with my friends than in he bathroom with straight frat bros doing key bumps.

I'm not denying men are often awful to women

"I'm not denying women are awful to men..."

Does that sound weird to you? Men aren't awful to women, some people are awful to other people. It's not about gender. It's okay to have been a victim, don't let the stereotype try to minimize your pain.

You ask a cop to help as a man, theyll ask you what you did to make her do that - straight up pussy pass right there. Its happened to me. Its easy to see that most people in our society believe that men always have the power in the relationship and cant be victims. People simply think youre lying.

[–]d10x5 128 points129 points130 points 5 years ago* (27 children) | Copy Link

An ex punched me in the face and smashed my tv and threw my polish army boots (heavy things) at my face. I called the police and they accused me of hurting her first and treated me like a pos. My mouth was bleeding from her first punch ffs.

Full disclosure, I went upstairs after she punched me and ripped off the cupboard door and beat it up but I didn't lay one finger on her at any moment before or after. But those pigs treated me like pure shit. Twisting my arms up my back and standing on me. Yeah fuck the police

Edit. ..I didn't resist when the police came. They already had their narrative assumed and "knew" I was the bad guy even though I had called them while she was smashing the tv. They are mostly pure fucking scum.

[–]LuckyStudent11 46 points47 points48 points 5 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Really sorry that happened to you, man. This is why I never talk to anyone, even to people I know. Stuff like this really pumps my paranoia full.

[–]d10x5 36 points37 points38 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Thanks mate but if you don't speak up you are just adding to the stigma buddy and helping it stay brushed under the carpet. We have to be strong as men and speak up when things aren't right ay man? :D

Woman sure do it enough and good on them, what's the difference for us?

[–]LuckyStudent11 11 points12 points13 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

My gf at the time was drunk, and had tried to convince i was drunk (hadnnt consumed anything for 5+ hours) and tried to get her friends to prevent me from driving to two of us home.

Yadda yadda finally im making the long drive home with her on a major highway, and shes going crazy (i gotta get out of this car, i cant breathe, i dont trust you right now) i really wanted to wait for an exit, but this was starting to be dangerous (interfering with my driving).

So i stop on the side of the major divided 3 lanes each way higheay. She gets out and runs off(wooded area). I dont know what to do, i dont think i should leave the car. A cop stops within a few minutes. Asks whats going on. I say my gf ran off, shes drunk and we were arguing. Hes “i didnt hear that. You two were having a discussion” then he comes and does a quick assessment and decides im totatlly sober and we go looking for her. 10min later he tells me drive ahead to an offramp, and ill keep looking. Luckily he found her and drove her to me. So lucky she didnt say anything. She would have gotten a free pussy pass that night if she wanted. I cant believe i actually married her.

I was almost arrested just for saying my gf and i had an argument when she ranoff from our car on the highway.

[–]d10x5 13 points14 points15 points 5 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

You're lucky that she didn't spill any booze on your clothes or you would have likely been fucked mate ha.

You out of that now then?

[–]djb1983CanBoy 31 points32 points33 points 5 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

Ya but we have a kid. Shes using her pussy pass as much as possible over our divorce. Wont give me 50/50, wont disclose financially, wants childsupport (i have little income, she makes 100k), took the car, wouldnt agree to split our stuff amicably, claims i owe her a hell of a lot of money, so her equalization somehow ends up me owing her money. Fuck relationships, marriages, and women like this.

[–]d10x5 9 points10 points11 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Sorry for that, I didn't realise somebody might have a problem with me saying that.

Boots can be weak and made out of nothing.

My Glany are leather and steel-toe capped (English army boots don't have steel-toe caps). These things are heavy as fuck and to have one thrown at your face is almost like a small bag of bricks being thrown at you.

Is that any clearer?

Also I have Polish roots and proud as fuck of that too.

It’s seriously a joke looking at me as a 6ft 2 big guy you’d think I can handle myself and wouldn’t take shit but I’m the biggest softy ever yet I’d most likely get blamed because how could it be the girl when you’re obviously more powerful and of course a man. Just ridiculous

[–]majesticcoolestto 10 points11 points12 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The problem is even if you were the hardest strongest dude ever you still don't win. If you use the size/strength advantage then you're the bad guy for using it against a poor, small, defenseless woman. There's no winning in a physical conflict with a woman for a man. The only winning move is not to play.

[–]d10x5 8 points9 points10 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's it mate. That's the problem that society needs to accept. I'm not a big guy (5,8 average build) but was still automatically assumed to be the bad one, after I called the law and told them my ex was going crazy!

I was pinned down and treated like a criminal as soon as they entered...

it must be ten times worse for someone like you mate (with your stature I mean)

[–]djb1983CanBoy 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

But women have been saying forever that size doesnt matter /s. It matters anytime youre not in beb, but of course it also matters in bed. The lies society tells us.....

[–]d10x5 25 points26 points27 points 5 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

When I was 16 I went to stay with my mother for a few weeks. I didn't like her boyfriend because he was a bigtime heroin dealer so I asked that we spend a few weeks together without him around all the time. He went crazy and thought me and my mother were fucking each other.

He ended up breaking down the door and saying he was going to kill us both, I was literally off the ground and using all my might (pushing my feet against the wall and my back against the door, that was now off it's hinges)... We were terrified.

So, when the police finally arrived and saw the door was completely smashed and me and the mother were in bits and scared for our life.

That first pig said "hmm, I can smell cannabis, have you been smoking here?" I shouted at him and got told to calm down etc. as if I was the problem.

That says it all about them

Edit. Digressed a little talking about my hatred of police, sorry ha

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

There was a guy who's ex started beating herself up so that it would look like he beat her. He was fortunate enough that she didn't realize his 3DS had cameras. But oh dear Lord I'll be friends with a girl with problems but dating is out of the question. (Maybe not false allegation problems though.)

[–]sodiumbicarbonade 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Literally, I was telling a girl to ‘leave me alone,” “stop touching me,” “no I really don’t wanna kiss you,” and she backed me into a legit corner and then proceeding to kiss me so I pushed her off and she fell to the ground. The bouncer threw me out and said “I don’t care what she did you don’t push a woman”. Like sir I just told you she sexually assaulted me and you don’t care bc I pushed her off of me and her drunk ass fell to the floor? Same situation when i tried reporting an incident to the university, and the lady scuffed and said “just a kiss?”, which is beyond fucked up imo.

While I won't pretend women aren't overwhelmingly the victims in domestic abuse, what you're saying is true. Men are victims a lot more than society thinks, and there is not a lot of sympathy for them. It's pretty messed up.

[–]roflkaapter 6 points7 points8 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Except women aren't overwhelmingly the victims in domestic abuse.

[–]vcjdeathrow 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Before I worked at a domestic abuse group, I was in law enforcement. I saw a lot of abuse. I also saw a lot of false claims, by women. As far as reported, verifiable cases of domestic abuse, women are absolutely victimized more than men. It's not even close.

I'm specifying reported crimes, where abuse can be verified. I also know men very often don't report abuse, or if they do, do not seek any further action against their abuser. I saw it plenty of times. Still, it was nowhere close to how many women I saw get the shit kicked out of them by some drunk asshole.

Believe what you want. I can only speak on what I saw in my profession.

[–]roflkaapter 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

>reported
and there's the rub

[–]typicalsupervillain 23 points24 points25 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And women are the primary source of domestic abuse. There’s a linear relationship between the number of women in a relationship and domestic violence. Gay couples have the lowest rate, lesbian couples have the highest, and the straight couples are right in the middle.

Virtually every support system will refuse to help a man as a victim, even though 15% of men are, and 17% of women are. Essentially some 40-45% of victims are just laughed at.

Reminds me of when I was a kid. My parents would fight and my mom would grab all of us kids (me, my 7 yo brother and 13 and 12 yo sisters). She took us to a shelter for the night. They wouldn't let us in because of me and my brother. Not because we were kids but male. I still remember that ladies face when she looked at us and said it. So every time they fought me and my bro had to stay with my dad. He would sit us down and just go off on my mom, telling us all these horrible things about her.

The last 10 years of my marriage was abusive, there was no services I could use or places to go. Ringing the domestic violence numbers was a joke "just try not to make her angry" or "we know your the one being abusive" was the most common reply. If it was not for my boss going above and beyond for me I would not be here, I had the spot picked out and wrote so many letters saying goodbye. And for those who wonder why as a man I could not just leave, She threatened to call the cops and tell them I was beating her and would make sure I never saw my kids again if I tried to leave.

Ohhhhh this article was a frustrating read. The comments below it are even worse.

91% of domestic abuse victims are women, studies have shown.

Having their interviewees talking about how the women might lose out on domestic abuse help, rather than the fact that men have been losing out on it for centuries.

They didn’t even cite their study they said showed that women were the victims. There are lots of studies out there that show pretty clearly that when you account for the stigma around male victims, when you account for the fact that the legal definition of DV is inherently skewed to make women be the only victims, and when you account for the fact that men are told to suffer in silence, you actually find that men are abused by women almost completely as much as women are abused by men. Frequently this takes the form of psychological and emotional abuse. Physical abuse is often a factor too because that bullshit about “who is stronger, you or her?” changes when she has a knife. Like what the actual flying fuck? This article didn’t even try to appear unbiased.

Now I hope that Rise gets its act together and starts realizing men need help too because while it’s good that they are being held accountable, it’s not good for anyone to lose out on DV help. Men must be added to the system, but it shouldn’t be at the expense of women. And yet, losing funding is probably the only way you can get the attention of a corrupt gynocentric organization like Rise.

Tough decisions man.

[–]TomClaydon 24 points25 points26 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Lol of course it is. Honestly people don’t understand how often this happens with guys. We just don’t often report it or tell anyone out of fear of being shamed or laughed at or not taken seriously. Obviously that’s not exclusive to straight dudes but it is a serious problem. Most people think oh you’re a man you’re fine, it’s nothing. Meanwhile your partner is beating the shit out of you with any object she can see because she’s gotten irrationally angry over something. I’m projecting but this gets to me a lot having experienced it

[–]throwawayham1971 16 points17 points18 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Wait. Hold on.

When WE say equality, equity or whatever new buzzword we promote... what WE REALLY MEAN is that we get AT LEAST 50% OF EVERYTHING.

And this is regardless qualifications and/or logic.

Lastly, there's NO LIMIT to how much ABOVE 50% we can get. Because when that happens, then we somehow turn into free-market rough riders who believe in unbridled competition.

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points14 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Far more men are victims of domestic and sexual abuse than society has historically wanted to admit. Based on my personal subjective experience, it seems like the numbers are pretty equal. Men are either ignored when they talk about or choose not to report for various reasons.

[–]CarpeDiem96 37 points38 points39 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Sorry it’s not more entertaining?

[–]throwaway9732121 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's glorious. But I already suspect where things are going tbh. They are not just going to take this. Scary times.

[permanently deleted]

[–]youcantdenythat 36 points37 points38 points 5 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

I see your point but aren't those abused women getting a special privilege that abused men couldn't get simply because they were women? And now it's being denied. Seems like PPD.

[–]Mycroft033 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Well in this case, I think that it may not fit the definition of PPD simply because if we start funding for males by making females lose out, we’re doing it no better than the feminists did. The feminists made men lose out by making it a ‘you either help men OR women, not both, and women are more important’ situation. We don’t want to simply invert the gender of that statement. We want to change it entirely. It needs to be a ‘you help both men and women unconditionally because everyone can be abused’ type situation. Putting pressure on the feminist organizations is good, but helping men should not come at the expense of women. Helping women should not come at the expense of men. Men must be added to the system rather than replace women.

Hope that helps clarify a little bit.

[–]john35093509 9 points10 points11 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"Men must be added...", That's exactly what's happening here.

[–]youcantdenythat 11 points12 points13 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Right so the organization was supposed to help both with that money. They refused. What else could they do?

[+]Mfcarusio -19 points-18 points-17 points 5 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

I guess it’s just such a low bar for a pussy pass. They’re getting help after domestic abuse or whatever, and getting marginally more because they’re women. Really they should get just as much and men get more rather than them getting less.

[–]Grasshopper42 14 points15 points16 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

"marginally more"? Before you go saying stupid stuff do some research and you won't say that stuff. Men have nowhere to turn when being abused and get publicly laughed at if they admit it.

[+]Mfcarusio -13 points-12 points-11 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Marginally may have been the wrong word but the gist of my post is still accurate. I meant marginally more in real terms, like compared to male abuse victims they get much more and that’s a real problem, but compared to the rest of society, women that are abused and then get some counselling are hardly cashing in on the fact that they’re a woman.

[–]Grasshopper42 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Well no one is saying that women are going out and getting abused so that they get their free help. We are saying that the law (at least in the states) is on the woman's side to an absurd degree in every abuse situation. You can't tell me that the situation never arises where a beta male gets with a dominating female that beats his ass and he doesn't fight back. Where does he turn? A private psychologist if he can afford it I guess? Society cares more about women then it does about men.

[–]Mfcarusio -2 points-1 points0 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That’s not quite the discussion point though.

Firstly it’s a U.K. charity, secondly what’s happened is that a U.K. charity that helps female victims of abuse has been fined for not helping men out. It’s despicable that they turn men away, but if the pussypassdenied is purely that female domestic abuse victims have less help, it’s hardly a win in my books.

[–]AlenSchazar 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Not sure what it's like in your country, however in mine, men have almost no access to help.

CAFE - Canadian Association for Equality

According to CAFE “Nearly one quarter of men in Canada have considered or attempted suicide, and men account for three quarters of all completed suicides … Men are equally likely to report being a victim of spousal violence, yet they are four times less likely to have access to services such as a crisis centre or support group. Shelters for male victims of violence do not exist in Canada.”

In Ottawa, a man can go to a homeless shelter in extremis. But he cannot take his children. So some men, in hellish situations, must choose between enduring abuse and abandoning his kids to the abuser.

The Government of Canada document “Shelters for abused men in Canada, 2014” found that in 2013/2014 there were 627 shelters that offered services to abused women and only 6% of these venues allowed the admission of adult men. Note that this amounts to only 36 shelters across Canada, and includes emergency shelters which offer only short term (1 to 3 days) and mix both abused and non-abused individuals.

The funding is going to charities which offer services to both genders, these services are segrated for the exact reason you state and the same charity can run multiple locations servicing different groups. [–]sylanar -2 points-1 points0 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Is a domestic abuse charity losing funding really great news?

I agree that there needs to be more services and resources for male victims, but it seems like charities like this losing funding could hurt a lot of people?

[–]TypicalNPC 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

If you read the post, it clearly states its giving more aid BECAUSE they don't need the amount they have.

No ones being hurt in this process. Even if they are, ask yourself two questions.

  1. What sense would it made to take funding away from a group of people who actually need it (clearly stated they don't need the amount they have, nor would they remove funding for people who need it on such a serious issue, ESPECIALLY from women)

  2. Would it not make more sense to give funding to a vast amount of people instead of reserving it for one group of people?

If you need to hurt a few people to help a majority, I don't see the issue. It is great news, amazing news even, because it means more people than just women can now recieve help

I am estatic they are putting their money where their mouth is and making use of this pushed progressive society by making this issue gender neutral.

[–]john35093509 6 points7 points8 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is a problem because it's publicly funded.

[–]lakewood2020 10 points11 points12 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

The problem is when they get funding as a “public service” and only serve half the public. Why should the whole public pay?

[+]d10x5 -8 points-7 points-6 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That's a different issue to what I was making mate

[–]lakewood2020 11 points12 points13 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You asked why it’s a problem for everyone else and I said why it’s a problem. These massive charities don’t just go out and give, they need funding, and the government gave this particular charity funding as if it provided support to all people when in reality it gave most of its support to one class of people, so the government took away the funding. This greatly reduced their income to the kind of level you’d have for a highly specific niche market. They’re upset because they went from public service status to a niche industry due to them not supporting men and received fewer funds as such. If you’re all for charities only supporting a limited group then be okay with them only receiving a limited fund

[–]son_of_neckbone -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

Okay, as someone educated in feminism, this is just wrong. I'm really curious to where you get this information from because feminism has nothing to do with not listening to men's issues. Feminism includes connecting men with resources to help them with men's issues because women will undoubtedly benefit as a result.

It's like you stumbled onto this subreddit, saw a few submissions, and then concluded that that is what feminism is.

[–]Charliem1994 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

This is very good representation. Whenever a Western country opens up a shelter specifically for male victims, feminists picket said shelter. Or do you deliberately leave out the countless shitty, disgusting things feminists partake in?

[–]son_of_neckbone -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I used to work in law enforcement. Can't tell you how many times I saw a couple get brought in for domestic and the dude would be beat to shit, but the woman didn't have a mark on her. They'd still arrest the dude based on her word. The women were usually released before the men.

After I left law enforcement, I went to work for a non-profit for victims of domestic abuse. Occasionally, we'd get male victims, but more often than not, they'd decline to pursue anything.

Everything was fine until after about a year, we got a new boss. The new unwritten policy was all men were guilty. I would always try to be the voice of reason and state that guilt can't be assumed. Suddenly all the reports dried up and I was let go due to "insufficient work". Turns out the new boss was tanking reports just to get rid of me. They posted my job online not long after.

...

[–]corf3l -5 points-4 points-3 points 5 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I disagree with this in principal as it's not really a victory to anyone.
Lots of victims are now going to suffer for this
However I was interested by this

Studies have found 91 per cent of domestic abuse is against women, who are much more likely to be seriously hurt or killed than male victims.

Women also typically experience higher rates of repeated victimisation and are much more likely to be seriously hurt or killed than male victims of domestic abuse, with 83% of domestic abuse victims who are subjected to more than 10 violent incidents being women.

I wonder how skewed those statistics are due to the fact there are a lot less outlets for men to seek help, there is still a stigma attached to men coming forward and allegations of female abuse towards males are often easily dismissed or ignored.

Tie that in with male suicide rate being exceptionally higher than women you might see some correlation

[–]youcantdenythat 15 points16 points17 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Seems like they simply could change their stance about helping abused men and then they wouldn't have lost their funding?

Don't blame justice for this. Blame the women who were denying the male abuse victims.

[+]corf3l -8 points-7 points-6 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I'm not blaming justice.
There is no justice here.
It's great that there will now be more funding available to other charities that mean Men get more support however the manner in which it has been done can't be applauded.
This is not a reflection on the charity but more so on the government spend - they funded this for 26 years and all of a sudden they pull funding blaming the charities diversity?
This is about the government not the charity

[–]Orisi 7 points8 points9 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's the government's job to review services and ensure that what they're being funded for remains fit for purpose. If they're reviewed and the council find they're pumping huge amounts into a service that refuses to serve 50% of the population, when other services may support 100%, they're going to redirect funds towards that charity instead to provide better services in the community. That's the council's job at the end of the day, to make sure theyre spending on services properly.

[–]youcantdenythat 7 points8 points9 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They could have just started helping men, then their money wouldn't have been pulled.

[–]Vinlandien 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Abuse victims can be either gender. This “charity” was refusing an entire gender, and as such funding can be given instead to non sexist charities who help everyone.

It also incentivizes them to change their policy and stop being sexist.

[–]Dad-man -2 points-1 points0 points 5 years ago (22 children) | Copy Link

I can't agree with this one. Some things need to be gender segregated, and this is one. My mother used a similar service, and i wasn't allowed into her crisis residence because it was used by other women that MAY have issues being around men. I get that, and was cool with it. The power difference between men and women can be huge. I understand men require these services too, but think they should have gender segregated services for them.

In Australia about once a week a woman dies at the hands of their partner. If we lost one person a week to terrorists, there would be massive outcry. This is not a pussypass, this is a greatly needed service.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (21 children) | Copy Link

With £5,000,000 they could use a small portion to fund a residence for men

[–]Dad-man -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (20 children) | Copy Link

Of a group of men could raise their own money.

A woman dies at the hand of her partner every week. If it was at the hands of terrorists there would be outcry and billions of dollars spent.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (19 children) | Copy Link

Many do try but a disproportionate amount of the funding goes to female victims. Both are important and both need funding. Violence in relationships is mostly perpetrated by men but not always.

[–]Dad-man -2 points-1 points0 points 5 years ago (18 children) | Copy Link

A... woman... DIES... every.... week

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link

That is true and it needs more funding than it currently receives.

[–]Dad-man -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (16 children) | Copy Link

What men need more, is mental health treatment, to help them realise that is not okay to be a violent douchebag. We need good men to help teach our boys to be good men. We also need to teach girls how to recognise the signs. At the end of the day though, you will never stop it completely, and support services will always be required.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

I agree and would go further and suggest that all people need to be taught about the importance of treating others with compassion. Abuse is unisex

[–]Dad-man 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

Very true. But the most immediate issue is the number of women getting killed. The answer needs to be multi pronged, but it is a number that needs to be reduced first.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

If you want to tackle male depression a part of that is acknowledging mens issues including abuse.

Sadly there are many issues that don't receive the funding they deserve. This issue is interesting because it test the equality legislation

[–]AlenSchazar 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I see that you have a heavy bias for helping women more than men.

You have 3 people being abused. Two are girls and one is a boy. You run a shelter with 3 rooms and social workers there to help them

Do you not allow the 1 man to enter because 2/3rd's of the victims are women? From the article it sounds like exactly what the charity did and they chose to lose 5 million pounds over actually helping everyone.

I'm hearing all of this from someone who hates the idea of a man actually having the slightest opportunity of having a support system because suddenly the entire system isn't 100% focused on them.

Are you just going to leave that 15% ignored to fucking off themselves or have whatever vile shit be continually perpetuated against them in some living hell? And if so, for what reason, just because he's a man and he should be able to handle himself? Where did the idea of disassembling the foundations of toxic masculinity go, then? Oh wait, you're busy perpetuating the idea by claiming that any man who doesn't instantly bow down to you a virgin.

What you push forward here is a growing culture of convincing men that feminist ideas can intersect with what men want/need only to flake out when someone finally needs the support structures it can provide, and it's fucking tiring. It's tiring because there is common ground, but people like you soil the image and drive the wedge further.

[–]feluto 31 points32 points33 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Why did you not address my point? Even if your imaginary statistics were true it's still immensely immoral to refuse to help that '15%'. If police arbitrarily didn't show up to 15% of emergency calls would that be okay if the other 85% were answered? How about death row, if 15% are innocent does that mean the death penalty is all good?

Mental illness and abuse are not jokes or your political tool. I'm far from a virgin and unlike you i don't hate women, men, or myself. Maybe if you work on yourself, have more empathy you'd score someone who actually likes you? Who knows, you might stop being such a cunt

Noice, "The fact is this happens to women in larger numbers" bullshit man, men do not report it because 1. They are afraid of their partner, which is a common accurance in women's cases so let's cross that 2. There is no campagin advertising services to them 3. They are teached from childhood that they are monsters and only women can be victims, just like you kinda suggested 4. There are almost no services for men 5. Men are told that they can't be abused because they are stronger 6. They are suggested to be the abusers when they call in 7. If the abuser is women, se can easily turn around the table and report the victim for DV or rape i can't think of any other right now.

[+]SillyOldBillyBob -42 points-41 points-40 points 5 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

I totally disagree with this actually. They need to have the services for men definitely but women need it also. Taking away funding from a service that helps women only is as fucked up as taking it away from a service that helps men only.

[–]Equilibriator 52 points53 points54 points 5 years ago* (8 children) | Copy Link

It's a service that's supposed to help everyone. They haven't been. They lost their funding for that reason, if they want it back then they need to do their job properly.

It scares me what they've said to everyone except women for this to come to pass. A lot of desperate people turned away when they finally asked for help by the one group they probably thought would help them. It's disgraceful.

Imagine a fire breaks out in your house and the firestation refuses to help you because you're a man. You don't then say "well maybe we need another firestation for men". No. We need a fire station that doesn't discriminate. It's public funding, you don't get to discriminate with money pooled from everyone and anyone for a job that is expected to be for everyone.

[+]SillyOldBillyBob -27 points-26 points-25 points 5 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

I'm not sure it's a service for everyone. According to Rise's website it's for women.

[–]Equilibriator 19 points20 points21 points 5 years ago* (6 children) | Copy Link

I mean, that's all well and good if their funding is self sourced but it sounds like it's public funding (the 5 mil).

I understand public funding for sex specific problems, like free tampons for women (lazy example) but for problems like domestic abuse which can be both genders, there's no reason they should receive funding if they are only serving one gender.

Like my example, we don't need firestations for men and firestations for women, we just need one firestations for everyone.

It's wasted money if you need to have two things, primarily made up of the exact same components, doing the exact same job but just refusing people based on gender.

However, arguments can be made if the need outweighs the individual service but this falls into a weird discrimination issue.

[+]SillyOldBillyBob -26 points-25 points-24 points 5 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Both genders are affected but both need different treatment. For example you can't have a load of men in a women's domestic violence shelter.

[–]youcantdenythat 15 points16 points17 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Why? I don't see gender, I see abused people trying to cope and heal.

They don't have separate hospitals for women and men.

[–]SillyOldBillyBob -3 points-2 points-1 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

If you have been domestically abused and you are in an emergency shelter, mostly this will be an issue for women. But if you were raped for example you may not feel safe in a big hostel with men and women both there. In the UK we do dumb shit like send trans sex offenders to women's prisons where they go on to abuse and rape female inmates. People game the system in order to find new victims. Remove the men from the women and vice versa, problem reduced. Also men's abuse and women abuse are different due to the inherant differences between the 2 sex's. This is the same reason we have men's toilets and women's toilets / changing rooms. So a charity set up for women is not going to specialise in men's issues. That's all I'm saying.

[–]youcantdenythat 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That's just more fear mongering. You are part of the problem. You don't need different hospitals, you don't need different shelters. If it becomes a problem, put up a wall or curtain between the men's and women's areas. But I don't expect it will.

[–]SillyOldBillyBob -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Why do you keep bringing up hospitals? Do you believe that men and women are exactly the same?

Edit: here are the facts, sorry if its fear mongering but I'm afraid it's still a true fact. 124 sexual assaults in 6 years, 5 times more likely to sexualy assault. Official statistics (non partisan)

Source https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/seven-sex-attacks-in-womens-jails-by-transgender-convicts-cx9m8zqpg

Edit: regarding hospitals, here is a study to do with separating men and women in hospital wards, ie, gendered wards in hospitals.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18974690/

[–]Equilibriator 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is a fair argument but there's a serious issue where if you have separate organisations handling the same issue.

For example, if you have someone highly trained who can handle talking to both genders, do they go to the women helper or the men helper? How do you appropriately balance the sheets in terms of funding without appearing sexist? If one building is nicer than the other, can people not claim the other gender is being taken more seriously, etc?

The answer, to me, would be to have one company handle it but have different branches within the company, so as to be able to spread out its staff and funding where needed as needed. It's stupid to have 200 people on the phone ready to help women when only 10 women need help that day while the 200 people you have assigned to help men are dealing with 400 men on that particular day (again, lazy examples).

That's public money being wasted on needless division.

[–]schmadimax 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

True but they take public funding and public funding only gets given to those that do it equally for both men and women. Kind of a fuck up from the city but still if they don't help men it's only right to take away the funding.

[–]SillyOldBillyBob -5 points-4 points-3 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I think they should just put extra money into male abuse specialists, rather than take it away from women specialists. I bet you they have not put the money towards male victims. Not 100% sure about that but if I was to bet money....

[–]schmadimax 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Sure that would be the right thing to do but it the company has been doing this for 26 years and not included men then I fully understand why the funding was cut, if it's just women's taxes being out into it fine, go right ahead but if it's been men paying for it too and they should have access but the company decides they don't get any then cut the funding.

[–]SillyOldBillyBob 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Interesting argument actually, I still disagree but I see where you are coming from. I don't mind my money going to it, but I want more to go to men's charities too. Edit: suicide prevention for men would be a good example

Literally the first page of search brings up 7 different organisations supporting men in the UK alone. You didn't look very hard did you?

Edit: Okay, back we go to google folks. 'Men's abuse directory' first result - book containing 250 different points of contact for men to seek help. So 'there are none for men' is plainly bullshit isn't it? Are there more for women? Sure, but I'd argue 250 points of contact (again, in the UK alone) is a good amount, leaving plenty to access and definitely much more then zero. A bit weird that no-one thought the comment I responded to was worth calling out for the obvious bullshit it is, but hey ho.

Anyway bearing all that in mind, and the various organisations that cater for exclusively men or exclusively women, you'd think that stripping 5 million from a charity for catering purely to one sex would be lets say, a bit sad, and a bit stupid considering the endless organizations that do just that. But apparently stripping a charity for abused women of funds is 'pussy pass denied' and in fact great news, because as long as abused women are dragged down its something worth celebrating apparently. Anyway, I'm out.

I completely understand where you’re coming from. Allow me to explain a few things that might help ease your mind?

  1. Male help centers in the United Kingdom unfortunately on the whole tend to engage in victim blaming very frequently. This is not something I can exactly provide studies on, but sadly based on my research I have reason to believe that most of those help centers for men engage in such practices. Men who seek help from abuse at such shelters are frequently told that they probably deserved it, or that they are actually the abusers, or that they simply must man up. These are the big three things that DV victims get told, and there are many stories of this happening in the UK. I’m thinking that this might explain some of the outrage and the “no help for men” that you are refuting. It very much feels like there is no help for you when the people who are supposed to help you tell you that you are the problem. Now, I cannot say this is the case for every shelter, but I think you would agree with me that NO DV shelter should operate like that.

  2. RISE, the shelter organization in question in this article, is supposed to offer help to BOTH men and women. It’s in their contract, and their government funding hinges on them taking in both genders. So for them to choose to take that funding from the government that is specifically earmarked to help both genders and then use it for exclusively women is a problem. If they weren’t supposed to be handling both genders then this would not be an issue and their funding would not be revoked. I believe that much of the rejoicing comes over the fact that historically the government has not shown an interest in shelters receiving government funds for both genders equally and using it to help women almost exclusively. So for the government to put its foot down here is actually a big win for equality, and hopefully RISE will start serving both genders quickly, at which point the government said it will restore funding. We don’t want domestic shelters for women to close, but we also don’t want funds earmarked for both genders to be abused.

Now, RISE has a couple options here: either serve both genders and get government funding back, or try to turn their budget to privately supported by donations, and continue to exclusively serve women. But they can’t really continue to abuse government funding earmarked for both genders.

I hope this helps clarify a few of my points.

Now list the ones for women... if it’s anything like the US if there’s 7 for men there’s 40 for women and the men’s are shit holes

How many funding they get, and which of them actualy treats the man as the victim? And not the 100%abuser

Do you think it's ironic that on an anti-femeinist page such as this, we get downvoted because we believe men and women are not the same and sometimes need to be treated differently?

Studies have found 91 per cent of domestic abuse is against women, who are much more likely to be seriously hurt or killed than male victims.

They do not reference this study but according to the ONS (official of national statistic and the best source for data) the split is more 65%.

Because men don't report it and use it as excuse.

Strange they don't have a gender equality pay breakdown of the charity on the website.

How does this apply to this sub specifically? How is loss of funding a good thing?

[–]Long_Cut_7015[S] 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Because the funding will be given to domestic violence program that serve all genders instead of this sexist organization that only serve women.

If I'm being honest, I see no problem with having women-specific services for domestic abuse. Instead of punishing those organizations, they should put funding into men-specific services as well.

Just my thoughts on the matter.

Edit: I see now that the funding was meant for just that, and they failed to live up to the requirements. So nevermind! Hopefully they can find another organization that can succeed in finding ways to help men in abusive situations.

This article contains an outright lie that 91% of domestic abuse is against women. In the UK 40% of victims of domestic abuse are men, most at the hands of a female abuser.
