The erasure of male victims of abuse

Amazing work as usual.

In France too, it's classified as "Violence against Women".

Which is weird because it's a pretty evenly distributed form of violence, in terms of perpetrators annd victims both.

Yet, forms of violence where men are the vast majority of victims (for instance, workplace death, suicide, global forms of violences wars, etc...) are not categorized as Violence against Men and Boys.

I wonder if somewhere, there is a form of ideological bias at play...

There are 2.9 million British men being misgendered by their own government.

2.9 million. That’s how many male victims of abuse there are in England and Wales, and all of them are officially categorised as women.

‘Male victims of crimes considered violence against women and girls’, to be precise.

That is the name of the infamous policy document that the Government released this time last year to ‘destigmatise male victims of abuse’.

An objective it failed quite literally on its own front cover.

Take a moment to imagine how invalidating it must feel, for a man who is being abused to be considered a victim of violence against women?

And this is not just a semantic thing.

The whole way we help (or exclude from help) vulnerable men and boys follows this mental gymnastic dogmatic nonsense.

For like the title of that document, the narrative is just as one sided; for there is no help, no specific interventions and virtually no shelter for men at all.

These abused men are the ugly and inconvenient truth, stuck to the shoe of our domestic violence charity, that is being trodden across Westminster.

And it humiliates us all.

The only thing more shocking that this bogus categorising of men and boys is the answer given to “why?”

And the words of our very own Minister of State for Home Affair say everything – they’re scared.

Our own Government are scared of sticking up for abused men and boys, scared of fulfilling their obligations as politicians and as human beings.

Worst of all, they are scared of the domestic violence industry itself.

It’s a mess, and one nobody wants to talk about.

That titled document is so emasculating too. It's like saying "men can't experience violence unless they're sissies." This is one reason why men don't report.

How do they only get 1/3 of victims are men? Studies done here in States since the 90s show men suffer at similar rates to women thus it should be much closer half. Makes me wonder what they consider abuse. Pretty sure if it's about 50/50 here it's probably 50/50 just about everywhere in the free world.

Excellent work. The UK is so unbelievable twisted in how it views gender issues that it's hard to put into words how absurd it is. Of course, it's commonly known at this point that men literally cannot be raped by women under UK law, but we live in a country where it is unironically proposed by the government (a Conservative government, no less) that women do not get sent to prison for the same crimes that men do. It's just so far beyond sexism that if you made a satirical film you wouldn't think to include this in it, as it'd be too unbelievable. You have men suffering at drastically higher rates than women to violent crime, but what do the political parties make a core pledge? You guessed it. There's apparently a 'violence against women epidemic' because... there just is, okay? No help or focus on men, ever. Other than to say it's our fault and we need to be better, of course.

When it comes to domestic abuse, of course men are going to be way higher than reported, as women slapping their husband or even kicking them in the balls is not only accpeted but considered funny, most men aren't reporting that. But what I find interesting is how people who lack empathy for men often try to argue that because men aren't the majority of victims it doesn't really matter and shouldn't be focused on. I wonder if, going by this logic, they think that racism or transphobia or homophobia should be ignored, since the majority of people are not affected by them?

There’s got to some reason behind it.

I know women only organisations have had their funding pulled by some local authorities. Unless I’m mistaken, this doesn’t mean that each local authority has to fund gender neutral organisations but it that it should be based on need in their area.

I wonder if categorising men as victims of “violence against women and girls” is related to fudging statistics so that women only organisations continue receiving funding. Could explain why there still seems to be little to no shelters for men.

Yes, it's a farce. But it does keep up those numbers for the headlines "Violence against women laws charge hundreds within a month".. no mention of whether those hundreds are women or not.

It's curious that domestic violence seems to now be considered a gendered act, only against women, whether those women are female or male. I assume the complement is true, that it can only be committed by men, whether those men are male or female. Again, those numbers are going to be spectacular.

It’s the same in Sweden. The officials when questioned on it said only competent people can understand this and that it makes perfect sense.

The page on Womens Aid says that domestic abuse is gendered issue. Despite 576,000 men contacting the domestic violence charity "Mankind". It is estimated that men are 3x less likely to report then women on the site.

When you are aware of the reality of gender symmetry in DV, of the treatment of Erin Pizzey, Murray Strauss-Kahn and so on, the reading of the feminist scholarly paper "the feminist case for acknowledging women's acts of violence" gives you all the answers as to what is going on.

Feminists explaining that the DV industry, through lies, data manipulation and pressures on researchers, has been willingly framed as gendered in order to spread the feminist framework of men as perpetrators and women as victims and secure funding to feminists that they then embezzled to lobby for political changes.

So of course the feminist associations are pissed if there are official documents that show their lies to the world.
