My STBX and I filed taxes jointly for 2022. Income was a combination of my W2 and a 1099, she also had a 1099 for herself of almost $20k. As we’ve always done, I overpay on my W2 as much as possible to absorb the taxes I’ll owe for 1099s. She didn’t contribute to the payment of any of our taxes and now wants me to give her part of the refund I got because of overpayment. Since she didn’t contribute to paying any taxes my position is that the refund is fully mine since it’s a refund of having paid too much. I paid ALL of the taxes she should have owed. If she wants some of the refund she should pay her share of her taxes and we’ll split it along that same percentage. Anything wrong with my thinking here? We have had separate finances for years so there hasn’t been a joint checking account or anything like that. In the past I’d “share” some of a refund but my enthusiasm about sharing is shot at this point. What I did for 2022 was beneficial to her, no further favors needed IMO. Any input from y’all?
