The first line of the publication should ring alarm bells: "It has long been known to science that women find it easier than men to multitask and switch between tasks." This is not something any scientist would ever say.

Digging deeper I found that to publish you need to pay. For those not familiar with academics - the more you publish the more your status rises. Very often your university expects you to publish regularly. Some so called journals take advantage of this system by publishing anything as long as you pay.

edit: i didn't read the other commenter's citation before i posted this. the authors of that study claim the data presents a more complicated view of the matter than i have. i can't contribute much to the psychology conversation, but i think what i said about the headline still stands.

i am honestly confused as to why they picked that title. all the data they present supports the idea that men tend to focus more intensely than women, and need stronger stimuli to draw their attention to a new subject.

that isn't exactly new, and is, as far as i understand, pretty well supported. i'm not exactly up on the field of sexual dimorphism, but i did take a bit of psychology in school, and this was in there, so it's not a wacky new idea.

not sure where greed comes into it, though. increased demands of stimulus needed to draw attention does mean higher activation in relevant brain regions before the switch is made; that would mean higher energy consumption for every switch of attention.

i think they just wanted a 'girls rule, boys drool' headline though. there's very little to sink our teeth into here.

The actual study has so little to do with actual greediness that I can't take the person who wrote this seriously.

Why are men greedy? So they can provide for women. Why are women not greedy? Because they have men to provide for them so don't need to be greedy themselves, they just seek out the best provider they can obtain the services of. Even on a biased bit of research like this the anti-male ideology underpinning the thinking behind the conclusion that reveals the shortfalls in the authors critical thinking abilities. Men sacrifice far more than women to obtain resources that they give to others. That they take what scraps they are able to grasp for themselves more than others who they provide for is hardly even greed as most people understand the concept.

Too lazy to read the study but a quick thought is that greed manifests in different ways. Women probably weigh social status a lot more than money vs. men and vice versa.

At the end of the day it's just boils down to narcissism - for both sexes.
