A few weeks ago I notice my partner make comments saying he doesn’t mind my style and that I just dress differently for most girls my age and that it’s not an issue just weird for him. I generally wear modest clothing, I don’t like my bits and pieces out there. I try to put my outfits together well but not make them where they’re non-casual. I don’t mind showing skin or other women who do, personally I think they look great. Just mentally right now it’s hard for me to fathom showing much of my body. I used to get slapped for wearing leggings to the gym by men who were close to me. One of which friends at college (not so much a friend anymore) would follow me around and slap me simply if my top was too tight then claim he did it because he cared and saw me as his sister. I’m not his friend anymore for obvious reasons but at the time I allowed him to control me because I dealt with lots of prior sexual abuse and would do anything to stay protected and blamed myself a lot for it (for anyone dealing with abuse just know it’s not something you should blame yourself for). My response to it was to start dressing more modestly and to stop talking to men even in most casual manners. Did it help? No, not really. But I felt safer and more comfortable in my body.. and to switch back to now my partner wants to buy my clothes and today he said he was upset that I felt compelled to dress like a “grandma” (long floral shirt with leg slit, and a sweater ((its cold out here…)) and would like it if I wore stuff more age appropriate or dress like a normal girl my age. I don’t really think my clothing is out of the ordinary other than I love wearing long skirts or dresses over pants. We’re also both more traditional and religious so I don’t understand what he wants me to wear. He felt bad after saying that but I can really tell he hates the way I dress but I don’t understand what “normal” is unless he’s talking about blue jeans and a t-shirt? I would love to hear what other women style advice would be since he can’t tell me what he wants but has issues with me wearing what I wear. He also doesn’t like my shoes either and asks why don’t I wear tennis shoes. I usually wear docs, burkenstocks, maryjanes, vans.. I wear tennis shoes for the gym but not for daily wear. He’s a guy who casually dresses up a lot too. So I’m not really understanding what he’s wanting… He keeps saying how he hates that I hide my beauty under layers of clothes but I don’t want to dress immodestly or too plainly aka blue jeans and a t-shirt.
