Idk. I’d wager a guess it’s because sex is a taboo subject in the US, and that the culture here has focused on abstinence. It’s a rather conservative sexual culture for the most part - outside of college campuses at least. The other part is the law; 18 is the age of consent, and people are extremely sue happy here.

Combine all these factors, and you get sexually repressed youth whose only outlets end up being parties & college dorm life. Hence the massive amounts of drinking on campuses, poor self control with alcohol and drugs, and rampant hook up culture.

I think parents see all this, and then freak out for their younger children and think the solution is “we must be stricter!”, not knowing that that “solution” is what causes the problem in the first place.

If you’re trying to date a 16 year old, I’d say just move on. It’s not worth risking invoking some legal bullshit. Frankly, there’s always so many crazy ass parents with no compunction about suing the shit out of anyone for any reason. I mean, you’re gonna be in university, it’ll be absolutely whack if you gotta date high school teens. Sure you won’t have bar/club access, but you’ve got a college campus with access to plenty of women.

Because in the US culture. Minors are considered almost like "property" of their legal guardians. Hence, age of Consent is often placed at 18. When the law deems them "mature adults". So people can not consent until they leave the legal protection of their guardians.

Where as in Europe/Asia, most cultures consider late minors to be legally autonomous individuals capable of making their own decisions. Hence age of Consent is placed based upon physical sexual maturity. Which typically occurs at 15-16. You'll also notice that in Europe people tend to move out of their parents house much earlier than In the US for this same reason. And likely also due to the smaller size of European housing. I moved out at 16, and most of my friends moved out by 17 (In Finland).

Because people like things to be simple, people tend to think of their countries legal systems as "morally correct". So social stigmas evolve around the law, even if that law was implemented for only tangentially related reasons.

That said, even in the US most states have AOC between 14-17. But since around half of them are 18+, media is designed around that. Which is why most Americans seem to think it's 18+ in every state.

Because the very first European Americans (Puritans/Pilgrams) were religious Christian fanatics and their influence, for better or worse, still permeates much of the American cultural psyche, also for better or worse.

Much of the American cultural psyche is EXTREMELY childish, especially as relates to sex, sexuality and nudity, especially nudity. Consider there was a major EXPENSIVE federal investigation some years back because a nipple (Janet Jackson's) appeared on national TV for a few seconds.

Meanwhile in Europe and much of the world, even YEARS before that, what do you see?

i think because most of these relationships here involve a lot of grooming, when i went to public school and saw a 16 yo VS an 18 yo there’s a big big difference and it’s really easy for gullible young kids here to get taken advantage of idk

In Europe the legal age is 18, only in USA is 21. In Greece for example (where I’m coming from) you can go and do whatever you want, drink/go party in clubs/smoke…. Plus we’re more open minded with things that the most people they will never understand in USA

AFAIK the age of consent laws in most states is 16 and the laws are written so that a minor and someone within a few years of their age can legally consent.

So 14 + 20 = not ok

17 + 20 = OK

17 + 50 = not OK

The difference is maturity. 14 to 17 year olds are capable of giving concent to eachother as they share a similar level of maturity but once you're 18 you have way more responsibilities which makes you more mature and could easily take advantage of someone who doesn't have the same experience and responsibilities.

Personally I think the law should be under 18s cab concent to eachother and over 18s can too but not an under 18 to an over 18 as this is just immoral. At my 6th form, last two tmyears of high school in the US one of our teachers slept with two girls at school and because they were of legal age, 16 here, the school couldn't even fire them despite doing something so grossly inappropriate.

Sex in Europe is pretty much fun activity that everyone should enjoy. I remember some old TV movie from like 1982 that was all about kids in last elementary school year (13-15) going on school ski trip, most of them spending nights smoking, drinking, girl losing virginity to teacher... And that was (and still is) fun family movie, no joke.

In Germany, for example, it is ok for whole family including grandparents to go to nude beach. There are no special nude beaches. Just one beach with nudists and non-nudist. Also people play beach volleyball nude or not.
