why is the man supposed to or meant to "take" the woman? Why is taking what you part, part of masculinity?

It’s not old school or outdated. It’s in our biology. It’s nature. It’s not just a human concept. Males get to have all the cool features and colors and calls in an effort to attract women. Did you know you almost never see a female firefly? It’s true. They rest on the grass. While the men fly around, flashing their lights. Women only ever flash or move in response to an impressive mate.

I don’t necessarily even think men are doing any of the choosing… it’s women. Men put on their best show for the woman they want, but it’s up to a woman to accept him.

Women have all the choice in the world. Just not in our nature to pursue.

The reason is because of the implication of "taking what you want" or"leading to where you want" implies. It implies power, decision, leadership, and those qualities are universally desired in a partner.

Besides this, in the majority of countries, women won't take the initiative. Of course, some do, but this is rare. It is almost instinctual, where the men have to go out of their way to meet them and lead the interactions.

And, to finish this line of thought, to wait for the girl to make a move, to lead the conversation, or even to initiate an interaction is completely insane - there are so many variables, that even if a girl approaches you, it may not be the one you want/like. The men doing it is a lot easier, take a lot of pressure from the girl, show value and, more importantly, limit the variable in the interaction in a way that both parties end up winning.

It’s an outdated concept, certainly, dating back to even before our grandparents generation. It’s lessened nowadays, however, with the media depicting the way men “should be” and what women “should” find “attractive” in a man, it’s unlikely to change.

Most women also find confidence attractive in a man (why? Who can say?) and that perhaps is where this notion of “taking what you want” is supported

I'm sure I'm going to get a lot of angry replies for this, but here goes.

It's not in biology. It's in sociology.

Throughout most of the modern era, women didn't have any rights at all. They were expected to get married, be the property of their husbands, and reproduce. While most working class men had to survive by selling their labor to whatever boss would hire them, most working class (and even upper class) women had to survive by selling their bodies to the best available man. The only power that they had in society was to be selective of their mate.

This is still in effect in some ways today and it affects dating. Slut-shaming is still a thing, and it's from the days when women were expected to be the property of one man. The idea that they could have no partners, many partners, or partners that weren't men was damn near a crime (and in some cases, an actual crime). So society frowns on women who approach men, telling her that she's wrong and a slut for being too forward.

The only way to fix this is to end sexism so that women are free to let their freak flag fly without societal consequences, but a lot of folks aren't ready for that conversation yet.

Most of that can be traced to the Victorian period. Women were supposed to be all virginal even after marriage, sex was a taboo subject and only for procreation, etc. Women were put on pedestals and men had to "court" them. Arranged marriages were happening in the upper class.

Women are allowed to be aggressive now. Ain't it great?
