One of you buys the tickets off fandango.com for pickup at the theater.

If they act like they were expecting you to pay, great, pick up the tickets and you guys split the cost later.

If they insist on paying, just say, "Tell you what, we'll all go to a bar after and you can pick up the first round, we'll call it even".

Not sure if this is great advice, but I personally can't stand people handling money and trying to figure out what to pay, etc. I think the "I got this time, you get next time," approach is balanced and good on the money issue.

Why did you decide to do a movie date?

There are lots of better options. Almost anything is better, actually (bowling, pool, mini-golf, drinks, walk in the park, boating, etc.). Movie dates don't allow you to talk much, build attraction, etc. If you play it really well, you might get a make out in the theater, but that's not terribly likely.

Never pay more than your share.

This doesn't mean you can't pay for her ticket, just that it shouldn't be invisible. Address it right away, I'll get this and you get that, then don't mention it again.

My favorite is to tell them I've got this one, and if there's a second date they can buy me lunch/make me dinner or whatever. I like it because then they know I don't feel like I have to pay for the privilege of their company. Also shows them I haven't yet made my mind up about how I feel about them.

Whether you pay or not doesn't matter. Express that you know, KNOW, that you are under no obligation to pay.

She might be surprised if she's used to getting paid for, but she'll respect you more for it. Also don't be a douche about it!
