Everyone has their own scale. The most important part of marriage is how well you get along with your SO. I'm sure David finds her very attractive and compatible.

If you're approaching being middle-aged, and want to spend the rest of your life with someone, their current looks should be pretty far down your list of important criteria.

That said, it is pretty bad marketing for him :)

You're missing the fact that scales are very subjective.

I'm sure plenty of guys would find her to be an 8 or better. Honestly, in that first picture I have a hard time even coming up with a number for her, because the wacky hair-style and the blouse aren't doing her any favors. But she does have something of an exotic look, and I'm guessing that with the right hair-style, clothes, makeup, etc., that I'd very likely call her about an 8 on my scale.

But regardless of her looks, there is more to the decision to marry someone than their looks. I've known plenty of 8+ girls that I wouldn't even consider marrying, either because they were dumb as bricks, totally obnoxious, religious fundies, or something else, or some combination of the above. Honestly, I'd marry a somewhat plain HB7 with a great personality before I'd marry an HB10 with the brains of a plate of spaghetti and the personality of a rattlesnake.

Of course the HB10 with the great personality would be even better, but how many of them are there? And how much time are you willing to invest in finding one?

I think she looks fine! Probably she deosn't seem that attractive because she is about his age. Which nuts, usually men of his status and wealth go for much younger women.

I've certainly learned a great deal from David, but he always struck me as still being rather uncertain of himself. I'm sure he could get someone prettier but desirability is far more than being pretty. As we say in holland 'wie een vrouw trouwt om het lijf, verliest het lichaam maar houdt het wijf'.

Which roughly translates to:

'He who marries a woman for the body, loses the body but keeps the annoying bitch'.
