Find out where the indie bands play and go to the shows. They're crawling all over the place. Also art shows, like just out of college art student art.

Be sure to bring a fedora, some thick-rimmed frames, grow a beard/ironic mustache, wear your chucks, a plaid shirt, skinny jeans, and a peacoat. Also mention how you liked the band/artist at the venue before they sold out. ;)

I used to go out with a girl who worked for Spaceland that I met off OKCupid. I've played music since I was about 7, and always had a bit of a rebellious streak to me, but I also grew up quite the nerd (I'm a goddamn programmer by day) and was quite the awkward try-hard once I figured out what a penis was supposed to do with a vagina until I got out of college. Anyway, even though I don't even talk to this person anymore, I thank her for pointing me in a better way socially and musically (as far as playing it), and I've begun to understand the hip kids more.

I used to be like this. Sneak into a show (let's see, my college years, this would be Franz Ferdinand's first LA show) and ogle the girls like, "How could I ever get with that?" But it's sorta the opposite feeling of when you saw a hot sorority girl or hot cheerleader where the answer was obvious: better join a frat or become quarterback of the football team. A bunch of Parker Posey and Zooey Deschanel looking chicks running around with average or scruffy looking dudes, WTF. To be honest, sometimes walking around one of indie summer concert festivals where the h-girls are in their sundresses (let's say Coachella or Sunset Junction) is sorta like walking around adult Candyland, at least to me. Hipster chicks are 90% skinny, despite a diet that seems to mostly consist of Pabst and tacos (vegan or not).

One thing about the hip kids: I've never, ever heard of a straight edge hipster. So a solid majority do go out to bars and shows to socialize. And by go out, I mean all the goddamn time, like half the week. But of all the time I've spent running around Silverlake/EP/various hip areas, I've found the typical internet hipster stereotypes to be not all that true. Sure, the "uniform" mostly applies, as does an affinity for Macs and some bad music, but as far as the really obnoxious rich kids trying to be poor and LATFH stuff, that's fewer between. Mostly middle class and directionless, yes, but I think that's a lot of people these days.

Thing I've found out about a lot of hipster chicks is that a lot of them were sort of late bloomers growing up. So a lot of them didn't really grow up with the same sort of hot chick mentality from a typical club chick. So there's shields, but it's a different kind than usual. But once you start talking, it's just like talking to anyone else. Really.

Real suggestion: the MoMA. Spend $75 for the yearly membership, then go anytime you want. There are always cute hip girls there, and if you learn about what's on the walls, you'll always have something to talk about.

Um, hi. I guess I'm sort of the prototypical hipster (not by intention but that just seems to add fuel to the fire at this point...). Please don't shoot.

Credentials:

Goes to design school. (Major: Obscure... no, really. Please, don't ask me to explain it.)
Shops at thrift stores/urban/other places.
Comes from and upper middle class family.
Listens to trendy obscure music.
Criticizes everything.
Cute asian hipster girlfriend with panda hoodie.
Is also asian.
Hangs out with other "hipsters."
Etc...

Okay, here's the deal... "hipsters" really are for the most part just ordinary people. Yeah they may fit the criteria, but most of these kids are just looking for a good time and exploring their interests. The definition of hipster itself is vague, and anyone can pretty much be one if they wanted. You can try to play games with them, and sure you'll catch plenty of dumb girls to be sure, but for the most part they can be a pretty tough bunch. And if there's any credit i can throw in their direction, a lot of the "hipsters" i know are generally really chill and intelligent people. They're going to be harder to game, especially if they've read up on it which a lot of them probably have at some point. Hipster girls also tend to generally have more platonic male friends, so good luck getting them out of the way. However, it is true that they can be pretty pretentious and condescending. Sorry to use such an irrelevant term, but they'll see "posers" coming a mile off and they will mock you into oblivion if they catch wind of it. If anything, your best bet is to look for "scenesters" re-branding themselves as "hipsters" to stay relevant. They're the most gullible. As you can see, it's really just an all encompassing label at this point. Hipsters are just the bastard children from when post-modernism raped pop culture. In all honesty, i would recommend defining what "type" of "hipster" you want to go after before jumping in so you don't get lost.

Or... (and this is just a crazy idea) you could just go and be a genuine human being and see what's cool for you, disregarding the arbitrary concept of "hip" while trying to meet cool people along the way as opposed to hunting down specific types of girls in order to appeal to a fetish of some kind. Cool pretty girls are cool pretty girls. Best of luck.

Honest question, what about hipster girls do you like? I had a girl tell me one time that Led Zeppelin wasn't rock enough for her. Then berate me for wearing running shoes (sneakers) to a bar all the while trying to get in my pants because i've never heard of some movie she was obsessing about.
