Open everyone. Build rapport early, and enjoy yourself.

Rapport being...
[–]legion_pua -1 points0 points1 point 15 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link
"Rapport" is a term describing how awesome people think you are, basically. You open a set, tell a few jokes, show them a magic trick, and eject to the next set. Now you can come back and be welcomed into that first set at anytime for the rest of the night.
[–]krymson 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
wait wait wait.
You're mixing up rapport and demonstrating value. I can see why you would do that but they really are separate concepts
DHV is showing people you're awesome, whereas Rapport is when you build a connection with someone else -- Oh you're from Ohio? I went there for colelge! blah blah blah.
You can DHV all you want but unless there is rapport guys wont give a shit about you and girls wont feel any connection to you.

Don't knock it - it works

Right. But how would one build rapport without any awesome magic tricks? And is rapport synonymous with just building attraction in the group towards yourself?
[–]missebean 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Just to clarify, rapport is NOT a term describing how awesome people think you are. Wouldn't want you to go out and try to impress locals with your vocabulary only to look ignorant. Rapport means the harmony or relationship between two or more people, often in terms of casual conversation. Witty banter reflects a good rapport cause it suggests the banterers are on the same wavelength, in sync, in harmony. Their speech and manner are similar, reflecting a shared sensibility or understanding. Rapport is something that exists between two or more people.

Essentially, yeah. Rapport is used in the community in a less sexual context then attraction. You build attraction with a girl, rapport with a group.
[–]ehbeeseedee2 points 15 years ago [recovered] (6 children) | Copy Link
I've always figured you could build attraction with any individual, though, in the sense that you could make them attracted to you.

Two words for the same idea, really.

Now that I think about it, I don't think I'm going to head out today. I don't think I have enough material to actually build rapport, although card magic has always interested me, and a few beginner tricks would do fine for just that.
[–]acartoontiger 12 points13 points14 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
absolutely do not use card magic tricks to pick up women. can you think of anything lamer than walking in with a pack of cards? They will think this too. If you must use tricks... use puzzles & natural magic. It cannot look like you prepared at home or you will look like a fool.
[–]tarnok 5 points6 points7 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You should still go out, the less prepared you feel, the better IMO.
You don't need magic, that was just an example. All you need to do is be interesting and confident.
You already ARE an interesting person, you have interesting ideas. That's all the material you need. Play games, be silly, be yourself.
[–]TheRealDJ 3 points4 points5 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeah don't use magic tricks. Don't go to the bar looking to pick up chicks if you're still at a stage where you're nervous about it, go to the bar and get used to talking with strangers and meeting new people. All you need are question openers. Go really early that way you can start up conversations with people and when new people arrive, they'll just assume you're with another group. Later on when you're able to establish strong conversations and have girls already interested in you, then maybe throw in a trick or two, but no cards, just props from the bar itself.

The most important part is the going out part!
Go there, talk to people and check how they react.
Practice, practice, practice.
When you don't remember what you should do, improvise and learn from what you tried.

I almost always go out solo. Learn the bartenders' and regulars' names, get recognized & always have someone to talk to, and get seen to be known by people.

walk near a distracted girl, say excuse me and use this as an excuse to move her a little (i.e. hand on back to move her to the side) ... comment on something about her as you are passing by and strike up a conversation. makes it seem spur of the moment and gets rid of any approach anxiety.
works every time.
i used a variation of this idea on a girl at work today, she was longing in the breakroom with a leg over the side of a chair, as i was walking by i said excuse me and she laughed and adjusted her sitting position, i asked her what she was reading and from there we had a 40min discussion.

I have thought about doing this as well because I want to go out more often than some of my regular wingmen & wingwomen. What is your plan of attack for a night like tonight? Do you intend to break into a group and win them over? This is a good idea and good practice, but I am so accustomed to being with my own friends as a fallback that it would probably seem strange.
If I were to offer advice, it would be to go in strong and infiltrate the first promising set you see. Don't be afraid to leave partway into a successful interaction to start a new one. Sets can and do pause/restart if you are seeing each other multiple times in the night. Don't go in empty, think of a reason that they should induct you into their group and move in with that in mind. Dress sharp!!!

I've actually read books on gaming bars before, even solo. You should establish a circle first and foremost if you don't plan to bring any of your own. This means that you can return to your nest if needed. Once this is done, you're free to do whatever. I'm just looking to see if people have any advice for me that I may have overlooked.

One of the interesting thing you can do is find one of the AFC that is standing on the sidelines with his beer and ask him if he needs a wing, and then, just try to show him the basic stuff. It won't be long before he'll challenge you, try to do his "challenge". That's always one motivator. (Of course he'll try to spot the HB9 with 5 AMOG, that's the point)
Some of the best and some of the worst nights comes from this idea, so, your mileage might vary.

Start talking with people within the first 10 seconds of walking in. Always be seen with other people.

One thing that really helps with this is going to a place with a smoking patio. If you smoke, it's great, otherwise, just go out for some "fresh air" and automatically start talking to people there. If it goes well, you'll have people to go up to and talk to for a few minutes as you cruise the bar. If it doesn't, then head back in, grab a drink, go around the pool tables and start talking to people. Get someone, or better yet a group, interested in a game. Doesn't matter if you win or lose, stay cool about it. Now you've got 2 groups to mingle with if you can't find anyone else. Try not to stay with a group more than 5-10 minutes. Then go out for a smoke (or fresh air), or get a drink, open another group, or whatever.
EDIT: If you're going to buy someone a drink, buy one for a guy in a group.
