Don't ask. Tell her that you should hang out again, and assuming she responds positively, say "How are we gonna make that happen?" Unless you've completely misread the situation, 9 times out of 10 she will give you her number or ask for yours.

Doubt it. We haven't spent enough time together to keep convo going for that long.

Don't doubt yourself. Ask questions about herself, ask hypothetical questions, get her talking. Once you get past the initial hurdles the conversation will just flow. People love to talk about themselves. Make the conversation a game. On the other hand, if you invite them to hang out as a friend they may assume that they have been friendzoned.

Also, what's the best way to get a number after the fact? (Context: as mentioned earlier, I met the girl through a mutual friend but didn't grab her number.) I was thinking I'd text him to hang out and ask her for # so I can invite her along.

Why phrase it "too good" for asking girl's numbers? Do you feel like these girls are not up to par?

I can only infer so much from a couple paragraphs, but it looks like you are shooting yourself in the foot on purpose to avoid unknown situations. This is a really bad habit. A really, really bad habit.

All of the interesting people that I have met, known or read about, have a very similar philosophy in one key way: when ever an unknown situation arises, they jump right in. If you don't have this attribute you should develop it. If you do then you should strengthen it.

Get over yourself? I think you might be using this 'too good' excuse to rationalize fear you have (I do the same thing with AA, 'meh... I am not in the mood anyway'). It was your comment about not knowing what to do when you get one that leads me to believe this.
