Sounds like she likes you WAY more than you like her. It's probably really hard for her to imagine you with anyone that isn't her.

Unfortunately this means that you are going to have to keep her out of your romantic business. No matter how much you want her to just be your good friend, she can't really be that for you as long as she's wishing there was something more between you.

(If you're sure that she's not interested in you that way at all, then it's possible that she's simply afraid that like many people who get into relationships, you'll ditch your old friends. But my money's still on her liking you as more than just a friend.)

Social engineering/scheming is great for picking up girls, but honest conversation is what maintains friendships. Don't try to figure out what's going on, just talk to her. She might not have been trying to get in your way. In the past when female friends have cockblocked me a. they were much less sneaky about it, like literally just told the girl to fuck off and b. there was a good reason. Don't "call her out" just explain the situation and ask why she did it.

The female friends I have cockblock me too. They even admit it. Their intentions are usually good, or they are feeling insecure/jealous. But in your case, with her seeking the other girl out, everything seems a little sketchy.

If you want to try and be as tactful as possible, don't mention any of it since you aren't supposed to know (you don't want to out the girl you like who gave you key info). Then, I would somewhat obviously keep reminding Mary that you don't like her like that. If she doesn't get the hint, cut your losses and move on. It will probably be better for both of you. Think of how it must feel to be in the friend zone like she has for eight years...
