How do I deal with compliments?

Never ever give negative or cocky feedback to compliments. You're conditioning them to expect bad feedback when they compliment you, which then leads to them not thinking positive things about you. Complimenting someone requires a vulnerability in the speaker that needs to be rewarded.

When someone compliments you, anyone, you look them in the eye (or imagine it, if you're texting) and say a genuine "thank you." Not thanks, or I know, or you too, just thank you. Appreciate it, and you will respond with a genuine sense that they can pick up, and now they feel rewarded and will do it more.

Also, someone complimenting you is not an opportunity for you to compliment them, unless you say follow it with someone else genuine like "that's very sweet of you" or "that means a lot to me" or "I appreciate you saying so." Don't follow it up with a mirror of what they said, because your compliment will not sound genuine and it will make them feel like they were fishing for it, which is another negative response to their vulnerability.

All of that said, if someone is repeatingly complimenting you and it doesn't seem genuine (like they actually are trying to get something out of you) do whatever.

The sign of a high esteem person is to say thanks (or thank you) to compliments. Then change the subject. Its that simple.

Smile, eye contact, slow "Thank you", nod slowly. Act as though you took it to hear and it was the most genuine compliment you've ever received. Then keep talking about whatever you were talking about, or change the subject.

If you're being really flirty/teasing you could go "Oooh, I know your type. You want something, don't you?" But make sure you don't come across as being serious.

Say thank you. Or if you're looking for a cocky come back I often say,

"Come on, is that the best line you got? You can do better than that". etc
