Thought this was a lot better than the 55 rules one.
[–]12_bald_turkeys 29 points30 points31 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Yeah, the 55 rules one sounded more like "how to be a douche bag."
[–]jvw2941 4 points5 points6 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I couldn't agree more, these are legit guidelines
[–]bl1y 13 points14 points15 points 13 years ago (70 children) | Copy Link
Reputation should fall under the broader heading of social proof. You can try to rely on your wingman to talk you up, but it's better just to have everyone you've met say nice things about you.
[–]bl1y 10 points11 points12 points 13 years ago (69 children) | Copy Link
And about physique, for all the guys who are "looks don't matter, brah!" ...Well, they've never had a girl ask you to flex your abs again while riding you.
[–]frogma 10 points11 points12 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Oh man... back when my back was really strong, girls would love to run their hands over it -- same for my chest (again, back when it used to be strong).
Having said that though, I stopped working out hardcore about 4 years ago, so both my chest and back are pretty average now -- girls don't comment on them and don't run their hands over them anymore. But that doesn't matter, because they're still having sex with me regardless.

I have the sudden urge to do a whole bunch of sit-ups...
[–]TheEstyles 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Planks man better for your back.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
this
Sit-ups/crunches, and in general about workouts that involve curving your spine put way more force on your spine than is healthy. Then you slip a disc.
Find abs workouts that let you keep your spine straight and you're golden. Planks, for one. Another is to lie on your back, legs up at a right-angle and then make like you're pedaling a bicycle (remember to pedal backwards too!). Lastly, the exercise where you hold yourself up off the floor with your arms and repeatedly bring your knees up to your chest. If anyone knows the names of these exercises or wants to explain them better than I, be my guest.

[–]Gyissan 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (30 children) | Copy Link
But the core/ab workouts help in reducing bodyfat %.. so it does contribute to having abs.
[–]ASEKMusik 3 points4 points5 points 13 years ago (29 children) | Copy Link
I don't think sit-ups do all that much to reduce body fat %...
[–]Gyissan 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (28 children) | Copy Link
You are really underestimating those exercises.. and I was thinking more of crunches.
[–]6PoolPwnage 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (27 children) | Copy Link
Wrong. Not trying to be a d
[–]Gyissan -3 points-2 points-1 points 13 years ago (26 children) | Copy Link
Oh, really? Any sources or proof to back up your statement?
[–]6PoolPwnage 3 points4 points5 points 13 years ago (25 children) | Copy Link
Reducing body fat simply comes down to eating less than you burn. Gainig body fat is simply eating more than you burn. (600 over)
Look at people at the gym. Ab/core exercises are probably the most common exercise you see, next to concentration biceps curls. You see skinny people do them, you see fat people do them.
The skinny people have the abs, a skinny pack if you will. The fat people, are still fat.. The CORE may be getting stronger but its not reducing body fat like you preach it would...
Can't get proof because on the phone..
[–]bl1y -1 points0 points1 point 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Find a recumbent bike. Per minute spent exercising, it's not as good as crunches or other ab exercises, since your abs are only doing a small amount of the work, but you can sit on a bike for an hour watching TV. Bit harder to do that with the exercises that focus specifically on abs.
[–]gchahal29 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
You can lay on the floor and do sit ups as you watch tv
[–]bl1y 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Hard to do sit ups for an hour.
[–]P15Raindrop7 points 13 years ago [recovered] (29 children) | Copy Link
True, true. It's very simple: go to the gym, get fit, get some muscle mass.
[–]Magus531121 points 13 years ago [recovered] (7 children) | Copy Link
Maybe if I just keep fantasizing about it really hard...
[–]P15Raindrop45 points 13 years ago [recovered] (6 children) | Copy Link

[–]Magus531130 points 13 years ago [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You can convict conditioning too which will save the gym. Or Kettlebells... but it demands more discipline I think. Get on it :-)
[–]Ljungan 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]Isunova 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]gabriot -4 points-3 points-2 points 13 years ago (20 children) | Copy Link
Well not that simple for those of us who are hard gainers. I've been going to the gym religiously for YEARS and eating tons and tons of calories... doesn't do a damn bit of good when you're a true hard gainer. I still look skinny after consistently lifting religiously and eating >5000 calories a god damn day.
[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 13 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
You're bullshitting. Sorry. You don't eat 5k + calories a day and not gain. I simply will not believe this and refute your claim entirely.
[–]gabriot -2 points-1 points0 points 13 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Lol ok then, I guess I'm lying about eating 5k calories a day and not gaining (even though this is what I have to live with everyday)
Believe it or not some people in life get dealt hands that are shit.
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Start counting calories. If you're not gaining at your current amount then add another 500 a day. Rinse and repeat.
Nobody cares that you're a 'hard gainer'. You have to make it work for your body.
[–]B1gApp135 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I'm with you here, always been a hard gainer. i stopped caring about getting size and just started enjoying being fit. Working out both cardio & weights just makes me feel good.
[–]ASEKMusik 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
... I wish I could eat 5000 calories in a day. :(
[–]gabriot 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
You can, you just need to do it
[–]ASEKMusik 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Overweight already and with a slow metabolism... I think it's best if I don't! :P
[–]gabriot 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Ah I get it now... well if it's any consolation I'd gladly trade with you, I have a hard time eating a lot and can generally get by on not a lot of food (hence why I used to be so skinny)
Grass is always greener on the other side I'm sure though
[–]jacoballen22 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link
I'm a hard gainer, but 3k makes me gain and I walk about 5 hours a day and work out 5x a week.
[–]gabriot 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link
If 3k makes you gain you're not a hard gainer.
[–]beigelightning 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
Age slows the metabolism a bit too, I was a notorious hard gainer until my late 20s.

A desk job was the kicker for me. Got my first desk job doing some design work, started the 3 Latte a day Seattle habit, and add in a daily four pack of Young's Double Chocolate Luxury stout. If that doesn't do it, nothing will :-)
[–]gabriot 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Wait you're in Seattle? You know any good places to go out sarging? I have yet to find any good spots around here.
[–]jacoballen22 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Maybe you're right. But I certainly feel like I am. Perhaps it's because I have an eating problem.
gabriot's ‘hard gainer' club is exclusive, and you're not allowed to join.

[–]P15Raindrop24 points 13 years ago [recovered] (29 children) | Copy Link
Like you would not believe!. It's not like I try to explain physics to girls, that would be a joke, just why I love it. Curiosity about the universe, the nature of everything, the relations between the stars at the massive scale and the tiny things that we can't even see. Dude, women love that shit.
[–]squarehouse 4 points5 points6 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I got my girlfriend with a similar thing. If I was to generalize, really women respond to a certain demeanor in your face. This demeanor is triggered by you talking about passionate subjects, you get wholly into it.
It's a thing, especially for intellectual men, but it needs to be authentic and not supplicating, looking for a reaction, etc. For guys thinking that only jocks get laid, you couldn't be more wrong.
It also sucks sometimes though: It is exactly when I am the most serious about talking about something with my girlfriend that she becomes turned on by me, gives me the sexy look, and then I forget what I'm talking about.
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
it's not jsut that, its good you make it sound interesting but what people are mostly waring to is that you a have a passion about something

No way. Some distant civilization 2 trillion years from now gazing up at the sky, unable to see beyond their own galaxy, no way of knowing the vastness of the universe, thinking it a small, lonely place. ...I need a hug just thinking about it.

Start talking about how everything on earth was once part of a star, maybe two stars whose dust coalesced around our sun. Take her hand. Tell her that the stuff that makes your hand, her hand, everything around you, was once part of a star billions of years ago, travelled 1000's of light years to this moment, and will then separate agin in the next billion years. Every moment is to be cherished. Especially those moments that occur during the very special period you call your life.
That one got me 4 VERY hot women. But like I say, it's a closer line.
[–]bl1y 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
Or how we exist in a weird moment in the history of our universe where with powerful enough telescopes and some really fancy math we can actually deduce the age and origin of our existence. At other periods both before and after us, this would be impossible. Earlier on, the universe is too hot and life couldn't exist. Later on the finger prints of the Big Bang will be unobservable. We live in a very special time, almost as if the universe wants to be explored.

All she has to do it SEE that you love it by SEEING you love it. Once is enough. She might not even mention it. The give away is her eyes. If they are wide she has slightly open mouth or smile, you're good. The point in the conversation where you suddenly start using your hands to get your point across, or where you relive some emotion that you had. That's what you need to convey. Don't dwell on it.

A story to explain where "4. PASSION" can go wrong...
My ex (we dated for 3 years) knew me when I was totally obsessed with World of Warcraft (to a point where I initially ignored her for it). But when we started dating she pushed me to grow up, and I did. I stopped playing and focused on the important things. I've always put important things before games since, but I still remain very passionate.
Throughout the whole of our 3 year relationship, if I got really interested in a game or an idea for one, my ex would ignore my passionate explanations and thoughts and proceed to become distant and annoyed. She saw it as some foolishly stupid waste of breath/thought/time, despite her loving video games; The Sims, Skyrim, Red Dead, and Zelda (to name just a few).
Meanwhile, she had a great love for graphic design and slight interests in music and the arts. Despite me never being really interested in those things, I'd always look through her work and see how much she really loved it. I even attempted to try and get into an online text-based roleplaying forum where she came up with characters and wrote about their experiences while interacting with other characters made by other writers.
I guess the strong point of sharing passions lies in whether or not they personally think your passion is worthwhile and at least somewhat interesting. It's pretty clear my ex had no care for what I love, and didn't make any attempts to try and see from my PoV. Even if we had stayed together, I believe it would have become a deal-breaker when I graduated from college and started to pursue my own dream without any real support from her.
The fucked up thing is that the way she treated me about it all has caused me to doubt myself and feel like maybe she was right. But fuck that, I'll do what I love and if I change what I love, it'll be my own personal choice outside of her (and other's) influence.

Honest question:
how is this being "alpha"? Doesn't being "alpha" necessarily involve appeasing betas and picking on omegas to preserve your dominance/freedom?
This just looks like a list of things girls may find appealing...
[–]P15Raindrop1 points 13 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link
There is a disclaimer on that regard:
The alpha-male of ancient times is dead. We live in the 21st century and the rules have changed:
Being the human alpha-male a few thousand years ago (or right now in the animal kingdom) meant you get all the females. If you weren't alpha, then you didn't get any. That's a simple fact of natural selection.
In the modern age, if you ripped up trees and beat your chest, pounded on betas, etc, then you would probably get arrested. You're not going to get much pussy in prison.
The selection rules have changes. In order to secure mating rights, the modern alpha has to exhibit different qualities, such as those above. As human beings become more cerebral in nature, the desirable qualities become more cerebral. The selection procedure of the human female can be a very complex thing, and in order to not get left behind, the modern alpha male needs to understand this process.
Now don't get me wrong, some of the old qualities, such as physique, are still desirable, which is understandable. However, exhibiting these qualities has also become a subtle and complex process. You can't just punch a competitor when he talks to your girl, but you might be able to get away with showing your abs. Then you get labelled as Douche Bag McBroski. Works on some girls, but not many. It's part of the evolutionary process.
It's just that alpha is a position within the social order. The OP only lists things girls find attractive, but it should also list how to handle (other guys) betas, epsilons, and omegas?

The confidence explanation kinda sucks balls because it's assumptive on the fact that if you do X Y and Z, you'll be confident. While that may be true, some need it broken down that having self confidence is actually and honestly not giving a single fuck of what any one or group of people may think about you. This is your social armor. If you cannot care they cannot hurt you.
This message brought to you by Vyvanse and Lexipro
[–]goetz_von_cyborg 4 points5 points6 points 13 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
If you cannot care you are a sociopath. If you choose not to care, then that's confidence. Subtle distinction but important nonetheless.
[–]JesusBuiltMyiPod 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Ahh ok. So better to leave the option of caring in case you want to?
/hint //you're gonna want to
[–]frogma 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Yeah. You're both right, and IMO sociopaths are actually very valuable people to learn from. They just also happen to be sociopaths.
[–]Wiggin_Andrew 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I see a sociopath as expecting no negative reactions to his behaviors nor respect nor understanding of the other human's emotion.
What I (me also being JesusBuiltMyiPod) was attempting to say was when you have a group of people coming down on you for something they don't like, THAT is when you must not give a flying fuck.
You must be absolutely convinced, comfortable, and at ease with everything you do and say. This is the attitudinal cruise control to success with women.

I would like to share a little experience in this (I'm really beta as a way to avoid my natural alpha self, which is pretty arrogant)
Fake personalities and social tricks that people pull are incredibly weird to the neutral. They naturally avoid acknowledgement of you until they're no longer in the same room when they sense you're pulling a trick of some sort. It's really really obvious and gives you a bad reputation. Little tip, everyone says they know some psychological trick, especially those who watch Derren Brown. Don't act like you know them, don't even think of them.
If people in your circle of friends have a low or negative opinion of you (or you're low in the pecking order), this again is sensed by people and naturally you aren't involved in drama or situations or events. You aren't important to the group and therefore needn't bother with those people unless you're willing to bring high value to them. Then they'll start talking about you in a positive way.
This is more about understanding yourself, but I would elaborate that it's always good to remember your image. If you keep a mental note on how people perceive you, you know if you're doing something good or not and whether those people are worth your time. Another important thing is for you to be happy with what you like doing. No pretending, be yourself for the reason that it makes you happy!
Pick hobbies, tasks goals, focus on your career/dream/whatever. This helps in your character and personality developing into a solid story of a man that all women respect and admire. Not all of them will like or love you, but they will RESPECT you.
Now, being a mature person and having a good reputation is great. You know yourself and you know people enjoy being with you. You may even call the shots....There are other people in the world too. They are just as good as you. I'll say that again. They are just as good as you and you should treat them how you want to be treated. Give them the respect and help you want back from them and build on the connections you make (if you really want to engage with that person). As OP said, "pay close attention to your peers", as this shows your experience in social skills.
This really depends on your financial situation. Spending a little to elevate the mood can come in handy, but it's only a gesture. I would expand it to favours/listening/whatever you can do for the people you want to keep in your life.
Muscles, fashion knowledge and a positive attitude lure vaginae. Again, it just makes things easier.
My best tactic with dealing with other guys is smile at them because you know they're going to fail. If you aren't in that crowd, nothing to do with you. If you are in that crowd, treat them like your buddy.
Knowledge is power. Simple.
You're looking for a girl that wants you. Be you, like you, treat you with respect.
This is quite a long post so feel free to ask for any clarification.

One of the coolest professors I had in college always said, "Fake it 'til you make it" in response to our lamentations that we wouldn't do so well, or know enough about our field. While it's helped me in some situations, you can't fake Alpha. Either you've got it or you don't.

Too scared to nurture your passion? Beta as fuck.
[–]frogma 3 points4 points5 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yep. I'm passionate about drinking, reading, and having sex. Everyone who meets me will quickly learn that. Last night I was talking to this 40-year-old woman for a bit (she was already taken, but she was hot and fun to talk to) -- she has a pierced clit, so we talked about that for a while. She said it adds a ton of sensation. So we talked about guys with pierced dicks, and she said that improves the sensation too. How did we get to that point in our conversation? I don't really remember because I was drunk, but at some point we started talking about sex (actually if I remember right, we were talking about how her hands were huge while mine are really small, and the conversation turned to sex).
I also love to read, and I can't even tell you how many girls I've discussed Game of Thrones with. I love the books, the show's decent, and I enjoy talking about it.
Those are my passions, so I talk about them. Other people have different passions, but the same thing applies.
