Don't compete against him. A&A. Talk to him. Be alpha WITH him. Give each other value and then, when the time is right, if he's actually being an issue, you just wingman him over onto one of those five girls, do him a favor, and keep on keepin' on.

I know this feel. It is frustrating because when you're with someone a lot more alpha it makes you feel weak and useless to enter in any conversation. It makes me think and observe, "Why would they talk to me when there's a more fun, confident, and energetic person right here?"

The best way to deal with an amog is to befriend him. This is probably the bar-none best way to deal with him. In the end you probably WON'T have to deal with him.

Now, if this is not an option, then you have to make it look like he is trying harder than you to impress the girl(s) or trying to be better than you.

In this case, I would probably go with my normal way of dealing with someone. While somewhat passive-aggressive, it's not making a big deal out of something. You normally allow him to finish what he said, then go "Oh that's really interesting (an awesome story, or something like that) bro (champ, sport, etc)." After you make the comment you (depending on where he is) you go back to having a conversation (I usually go with a completely different topic than what he is talking about or on a topic the girl and I were having before he but in) with just the girl(s) and he's just there.

By what you have told us, if he keeps butting and cutting you off, a "Hey I know you're a real interesting guy, and I would love to hear your life story, just let me finish this real quick." Or "Man, you're making us all look bad."

If all else fails, "Hey I'll let you two finished talking." Then go talk with the members of the group.

However, I would probably first try to befriend the "AMOG"s before I would start with any of this. It's usually just works more in your favor doing this.

Growing up I was always a part of hockey teams, and was friends with some top players. If I am going to AMOG a group I'll do it just like I'm hanging with those friends. Little elbows to the body, taps on the arm, referring to them as buddy or pal, etc.

Furthermore, you should get rid of the notion that it's a competition in the first place.

I've had a lot of luck with just giving them huge compliments. Saying things like "damn, dude. You are ripped! " Or "damn, that is an awesome shirt!" or even going nuclear "damn dude, you look hot!" Only once have I gotten the "are you a fucking faggot?" response, but I live in the midwest. Folks aren't always comfortable with this kind of stuff.
