Just talk to someone, ask for their favorite place to relax around campus, ask for directions even if you know them, just something to break the initial fear of a stranger and move to the 'oh, they are a real person interested in talking to me'. Ive had a lot of luck around campus meeting people. If you see someone struggling, just see if you can help. You never know if they will be in your class or in your career field

Start with a plan. You could read tips here and there all day, but it won't make sense unless you have a sensible whole to strive for.

That said, lay out what makes a person "sociable" compared to someone who isn't. To start you off, sociable people have technical conversation skills. For example, if I'm talking about eating Chinese food at the mall, you can pick out two things from the conversation which is Chinese food and mall.

When I was living in the dorms, I looked for people with three things: Same personality, outgoingness, and a desire to be better socially. Anyone can have your same personality, but if they want to be socially awkward the rest of their lives they ain't going to go very far. Likewise, if they're striving to be social but don't have your same personality it's a lot harder to do things with them.

The most practical college advice I'd give you is join a club. I've met plenty of people with the same goals and personality by doing that. I still do. Just don't fall into the "I need to know everybody" trap. Focus on gathering a small group of amigos first.

Assuming you're taking classes, just meet people and class and get to know them. Eventually you can step it up and ask if they want to get food, or study together or something casual along those lines. It won't happen in a day, so don't rush it, unless you want to risk coming off as creepy.

One thing I did was to have a weekly get together at my place; we called it Maté Monday (we drank Yerba Mate). It started by just me and two friends drinking the bev. We invited people to join us and over the course of the year we consistently had 40-50 people show up.

I realized it was a great way to meet girls. I had a reason to talk to any girl because I had the coolest party on Monday night. I was successful in meeting and having solid relationships.

Remember, be confidant, don't be naggy or whiny.

its very frustrating to be In your shoes. It seems like for most people, making friends just comes naturally, but you don't know where to start.

That was me in high school. In college it became much easier for me so I know personally that you are probably not a hopeless case. However, there's no magical formula.

You want some practical advice? I think the inviting people over for dinner is a good idea. Joining stuff is a a good idea. Obviously, you need to have contact with people before they'll be friends.

Beyond that, you have to be the kind of person other people want to hang out with. Easier said than done of course. Generally, being a "nice guy" is not enough. Better to have a bit of an edge without being bitter or mean.

So have strong opinions and be willing to defend them. Sports movies music, whatever. Be ready to say something sucks. Caveat: avoid politics religion race or sex. Thats playing on hard mode.

Don't be obsequious. Don't try too hard. People get creeped out if you suddenly think you are their new best friend.

Become interested in other people. You're surrounded be students working hard on some amazing things. What is that guy programming? What book is that girl reading?

Start taking an interest in other people and what they are doing with their lives.

I was always interested in what other people were doing, so I'd walk around the library, see a friend and wonder what they were studying. We would chat about classes a bit then I'd meet their friends and it just builds from there.

I met a lot of people in first year by:

Getting to know the people in my Rez and their friends
I ask a lot of (insightful?) questions in class, people sometimes come to me after class and tell me they enjoy my questions (damn!!).
Activities.

By the end of my 4th year I'd walk between classes and I'd say hey to at least 3 people that I know. I think the record was 7 people during a 10 minute walk.

Don't turn down social invitations, especially the first time they're offered. It's amazing how many connections one can make this way.

Honestly Being both kind and shameless worked for me. Genuinely care for people but don't give a fuck about how you act. I was always down to do shit and invited everyone to pregame in my dorm. I was generous and flirty. By sophomore year it felt like I knew everyone and people that I was with would always ask "how do you have so many friends?" When walking around campus or at a party. College was awesome.

Some great ways I've found to meet some phenomenal people is getting active on campus. Small chat before and after class only goes so far. Check out sports clubs or non-athletic clubs on campus to meet people with similar interests. Some of these clubs can help you meet tons of new people who are similarly minded which helps break down a lot of those barriers you face in talking to someone new and not knowing whether or not you share similar interests.

join clubs, join study groups, play intramurals, volunteer. after that, it's all a matter of finding people within those groups who you click with and seeing what their plans are for the weekend.

I was in the exact same position when I started last semester. I used to be super anti-social, but it is honestly super easy to break that at college. You will notice in classes, especially the first few days, nobody wants to talk. Use this as a chance to just break the silence and make some friends. You will look confident for talking first even though you are just breaking the silence. So just go for it, talk to everyone and make friends!

Pro tip:When you meet a new person, make sure to greet them exuberantly every time you see them. The more excited and comfortable you seem when you greet them, the more excited and comfortable they will be to see you in the future.

Invite all the people in your floor to dinner at your place. Cook the dinner and bring some beers. This is the way I've always used when I was a student. It's super effective and lets you make yourself a lot of new friends..
