Baby step it.

Right now approaching is outside of your concept of self, so the fear stops you.

SO maybe you start just by saying hi.

Or waving.

Or making eye contact.

Lower to bar. Acclimate. Then raise the bar little by little. You'll get there. Beating yourself up over it will only kill your desire to do this again.

I resonate with what you're going through, and still hate cold approaches. But who knows, once the fear is gone maybe you'll be one of the crazies that love them.

Dude join some clubs, get active on campus, in the weightroom. If you have 6 hours free something is wrong. You are swimming in a lake trying to catch fish with your hands when you could be chilling on the shore with a fishing rod letting them come to you.

I was in an equal position a couple of years ago. start slow, lower expectations, try to get comfortable with the environment, but also kick yourself in the ass.

I’m literally just like you but I’m 20. It’s best to look for opportunities at food areas from my experience. Also with mindset just go in with the mindset of I’m probably gonna fail but I need the experience. If you fail you met expectations, if you succeed congrats self confidence boost. And you really need the fuck it what I can lose attitude. Other than that DONT be afraid to walk up to them make eye contact and say something like (if they are eating alone) hey is this seat taken? Or another one “hey I thought you were cute and I wanted to talk to you before I missed my chance”. Be yourself, you won’t succeed everytime but it’s ok just keep shooting your shot. Best of luck!

Bro I wish I could give you some other advice but the only way to combat your fear of approaching is to approach more. I know it sounds obvious and counterintuitive but this is what worked for me. Btw I'm still not perfect, just last week I walked around hoping to cold approach, and ended up empty handed...

29 Y/O here, hoping I can help out a younger guy like yourself. The reason you are so scared is because your going into it with the mindset of "what can I get out of this". All men do it, including myself. Your scared to interact with girls because it has everything to do with you and nothing to do with them.

Question: When was the last time you approached a girl without expecting anything in return? Now I do realize that as a lonely guy, this is impossible to do. If I was you, I would practice walking up to a girl, throwing out a compliment, and walking away. Then never tell a soul.

Mark Manson suggested baby stepping it. Start by asking 20 girls for the time. That's it

Then ask 20 girls for a good Congolese food recommendation (the more ridiculous the better)

Then ask 20 girls for a clothing recommendation for your female cousin and make a conversation out of it

By acclimating yourself to cold approaching you will eventually have a much lower barrier to cross to talk to a girl in a flirtatious way

I’m a 19 year old guy, never had a girlfriend, still a virgin, and I recognize that I have to do something to fix that, but I can’t bring myself to just fucking approach. Any advice from guys who are more experienced?

A lot of advice is out the window because of the pandemic. Just being real here: but public safety health measures take precedence over socializing haphazardly with strangers.

That said, it can be done respectfully. This video demonstrates solid concepts and techniques.

He's observing girls' personal space even as he's opening and through the interaction.
He's being respectful of coronavirus concerns but being playful at the same time. (Taking life too seriously is not a great attitude.)

Depending on how conditions are where you are, you ought to look for social gatherings. Just take appropriate measures. Have a mask with you, etc.

You can find social gatherings on social media. Search on Facebook: people have social groups and social events posted publicly, usually because it's cool for people to randomly show up. (Just read the details to be sure.)
