Q4w: Would you be okay with discriminating against a man, violating federal and state civil rights under the FHA to deny a man housing who will most likely be homeless?

can you link to the actual post? your limited description contains nothing illegal as far as US housing discrimination as far as i can tell? it is the lessor that is obligated by housing discrimination law, not the other tenants. if you own a home and live in it and rent out rooms or live in it and have less than 4 units, you are allowed to discriminate as long as you dont use a realtor the tenant basically has no ability to evict or contest the lease to the roommate, as far as i know. the other tenants cannot legally self help.

are you attempting some weird hysterical gotcha by trying to use housing discrimination law as some moral transgression? individual tenants have zero obligations in this regard

If it was the law I'd do nothing about it, but I wouldn't want to sign a housing contract where I had no control whatsoever over which other people lived in my house, especially if those people are able to be male. I'm under no obligation to let anyone live in my house even if they may find it difficult to find another house, and I assume you're not putting anyone up in your house either.

that situation is absolutely unacceptable and should never have happened and she's entirely correct to try to fight it.

if the man's sublease is in violation of the roommate's lease it's void and yes they should prevent him from entering the apartment.

the man failed his due diligence wrt moving in with roommates.

I tried to sublet my room of our apartment one summer in college to save some money. But my roommates “didn’t feel comfortable” with having a male roommate.

Meanwhile one of their boyfriends basically lived there and was frequently home more than she was. 🙄

in this specific case, since he had a lease, that's kinda the end of it. the subleaser sold their roomates out and there's nothing they can do about it other than lose money and move out.

but otherwise, its insane to think college aged women should be forced to live w a homeless man.

No. If I was sharing a house with roommates I'd prefer we have a house meeting with the LL about any prospective tenant, I think that's just common courtesy, maybe the tenant we're thinking of loves to drink and party, and one of the people living in the house is a former alcoholic or something, in that case, hopefully we'd go with a different tenant. I don't think you should deny a man just because he's a man but I'd be willing to hear out any concerns and try to find some way to assuage them - hey, if you're worried about safety, we can do a criminal background check and install an extra deadbolt in your room if that makes you feel more at ease.
