Approaching mixed groups directly?

Are you asking for help with your nerves?

Because practically speaking, it's actually easier than approaching an all girl group.

You said direct, right?

When I do a direct approach on a mixed group that just has one guy in it, I open with, "Is he your boyfriend?"

If she says yes, I move on.

If she says no, he basically gets shut down and will lose face if he tries to interrupt, especially if he's actually a suitor.

Outside of being her brother or her boyfriend's buddy, he can't really be the one who cockblocks you without looking like a tool after she says he isn't her boyfriend.

And if the girl does say he isn't her boyfriend, I'll just be like, "Alright, because I saw you and I think you're sexy and I wanted to come here and see if we'd get along"....or whatever my genuine feelings and intentions are in the moment.

And then I go from there.

If anything, a guy being there will make things easier because more likely than not, you already know how to talk to guys, and again, he doesn't really have a choice but to be nice to you if she says he's not her boyfriend.

And if he does get aggressive with you, passively or otherwise, he will have done you a favor, because that would make you look so cool in comparison, even if him doing that might make things so awkward that they just leave.

Ask a question to the group but look at the guy while asking then bring the girls into the conversation.

I think you have to question though what you can get from a group of 3 guys and a girl sitting outside. If it's an event or at a bar the girl is then warm and you can talk to her when you spot her on her own later.

Do you really want to spend your time trying those odds? A mixed group is likely to have a relationship in it and 3 guys and 1 girl seems like terrible odds, you're way better off with 3 girls 1 guy because then you can at least befriend the guy.

Why would you do that? There are no single girls on the street?
