I had the same exact problem years ago. I was looking for a room for rent and ad after ad said 'female only'.
Then I saw an ad that didn't have any preference, messaged the user and low and behold I got an entire book about how I should have never replied to her ad and that I should have known it was female only even though it wasn't stated....etc.. Did this for about 3 months before I finally found another dude to room with, which turned out to be a disaster.
I don't know what to tell you, we as men have got to start sticking together. I ended up applying at UPS, made it a career and now live in a small house by myself.

Seeing both single mens and womens homes, in many cases the guys are cleaner especially the bathrooms. Women just hide it better with a clean-ish room or corner that visitors see in person or online.

Exactly my experience, I've been thinking about making a thread about this as well. Whenever you see an affordable room, you just know it's going to be "female only" before reading the listing.

I understand when it's a shared house and the other housemates are all female. However, this should in theory be balanced out by "all male" shared houses. I believe the imbalance is caused by the following:

1) Families renting out a spare room seem to always put "female only", presumably due to the stereotype of women being safer to have around children than men.

2) Among single/widowed old people renting out rooms there are more women than men, due to their longer life expectancy. And old women prefer to rent to their own gender. My grandmother did that for several years and only rented to female students.

3) Sleazy male landlords willing to charge cheaper rent in return for benefits-in-kind from their female tenant.

Yep. This drives me nuts. It seems most women hate men by default and will only take a female. No wonder there are a lot more homeless men. Some women even get rent free if they agree to perform sexual favours. I’ve never once seen a place offering man free rent if he performs sexual favours to a woman.

You're dealing with people, people with government privilege, but people nonetheless. You can try reasoning with them. If they "prefer women" because women don't do anything except sit in a room and text their friends all day, tell them you're quiet too. You don't have any hobbies. All you do is work all day so you're not even there.

I think all these women preferred people are in for a surprise when they find out women create drama and always have a ton of different sketchy men over.

What you want is a nice thin incel.

Yep landlords have a very easy time of it, especially if they bought the place decades ago when it was cheaper. They get to charge and take whoever they want. I think the biggest issue is the fact you’ve got people like my landlord who can make a profit off of renting out the rooms of the 10+ homes he has and he can still discriminate on who can rent there, but the tenants don’t get a say on anything, we are just free to move to another home that won’t be our own. It’s long past time they made housing available to people who need it, not for companies to buy up and exploit hard working people.

I used to live in a college area and I had 2 female roommates. Both were Asian students with VERY conservative families from asia. There was just no way. They would have flipped out and I don't think they would have felt comfortable with a man they didn't know.

They didn't feel comfortable with my boyfriend and they knew him pretty well and liked him.

I've just run a search on Spareroom in my local area.

There are 267 listings.

215 accept men.

255 accept women.

When over 80% of the rooms advertised are suitable for men, I don't think the situation is anywhere near as severe as you're making it out to be.

I don't exactly advertise officially as I have ways to find at least semi-familiar tenants but from the looks of it yes, this does seem to me that people's bias against men might have them decide foolishly.

My general experience is that male tenants can be messier, but it's a much more marginal difference than people would think. It works like this, if you have a hive of male slobs they drag each other down, place becomes a nightmare, but if a slob comes into a house with responsible people, he adapts.

More importantly, male tenants can be gently told off "You're leaving dishes again"/"Right, sorry" without any fuss. A female tenant you tell off tend to flip the switch in various annoying ways. Argue back, feel wounded etc.

The female tenant may be more tidy and automatically contributing but, only on her own terms. You can't really cooperate. The male tenants may initially be more inert, but accepts when you take the lead, since it's your damn house after all.

So yeah, it's a close race and it may be down to preference. To me it's so close I try to decide more by character than gender anyway.

Regarding discrimination in accommodation the Civil Rights Act states:

“All persons shall be entitled to the full and equal enjoyment of the goods, services, facilities, privileges, advantages, and accommodations of any place of public accommodation, as defined in this section, without discrimination on the ground of race, color, religion, or national origin.”

Importantly, note that it does not prohibit discrimination on the basis of sex, allowing providers to legally discriminate against males as you are experiencing. (Though some states have adopted legislation prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sex, which you may wish to check into in the state in question).
