I think at 17 you might as well just do it. Get a good buddy you trust, meet up with the two girls, and do something fun for 1 hour tops. If it clicks with your girl, isolate. Workout a plan to separate with your friend.

It could be her parents not letting her go out alone.

Follow up question: what if you ask a girl to coffee and she shows up with a friend without asking you? Some people would say it's beta to just walk away right there and leave like a little bitch, but then what would be the correct course of action?

Fortunately, this has never happened to me, but reading OP's question made me wonder about it. Not sure how I'd react.

No. Do not. I repeat DO NOT let her bring her friend. This is a common test girls with throw at you. She's trying to find out if you're a friend or a lover. I had a very similar thing happen to me not to long ago. She asked if she could bring her friend, and I said "no, private party, just me and you". We ended up not going out but it saved me from being put in the friend zone.

DO NOT ever let a girl bring a friend. You think you can just freely escalate with the other friend there? You think she won't go to the other girl when she's feeling nervous and dominate the conversation, leaving you a friend? I've been in this situation and the girls either flake at the last possible second, or TRY to spend the night talking (because it's easier to talk with a friend because a girl is nervous) but as soon as that happens, you've relegated yourself to chilling out with 2 friends talking about something you don't care about... and the girl will pick up on this and you're done for. They don't even realize that they've set you up for failure doing this most of the time, but that's what they've done when they do this. Don't fall for it. There is 0% chance you escalate the girl and leave without her friend to your place without a shit ton of resistance. She's going to have a reason to leave with her friend, to put up more walls because there is now a witness... it's just a raw deal son. Always turn this down.
