The hashtag is meaningless in either use. It is the equivalent of being expected to prove to a racist that you are "one of the good ones".

The vast majority of men are not abusers or misogynists. Men are under no obligation to educate bigots of this.

Out of curiosity, I tried to find statistics, and it turns out surprisingly difficult to find concrete answers to a question as simple as: "How many men are rapists?"

The number of guys who are actually convicted of rape seems to be very small overall. It seems a well established fact that most men who rape, don't do it just once, so there are often far more victims out there than perpetrators. Just doing a lazy, back-of-the-envelope calculation based on the number of registered sex offenders, and what crimes got them on the registry, something like 0.02% of men are actually proven in court to be rapists.

Looking for papers, I found one study from 2002 cited by journalists, which was based on an anonymous survey of college guys. According to that study, 6.3% of men are rapists. Compared to the admittedly sketchy calculation I did in the last paragraph, that seems a little bit high to me. I'd be curious to see more detail about the methodology and which questions, specifically, led to the conclusion they were rapists, but I digress. I may be a nerd, but this is pretty far out of my area of expertise so I'm hardly qualified to critique an academic paper in this field.

Still, even going by the 6.3% figure... That's a long way away from all men being assailants-in-waiting. Even if 7% of guys are scumbags, that leaves 93% of guys who aren't.

So yeah... the use of #NotAllMen is very much justified as a response to overly broad generalizations about men.

"Not all men" is like "not all black people."

Nobody says "not all black people are criminals!" because they don't legitimize that kind of hatred and stereotyping. They don't validate or tiptoe around their feelings. Any situation in which you would use "not all men" is a situation you should instead be saying "go fuck yourself, sexist."

That's a LIE. That's the specific PROBLEM with feminism-that they take the actions of a FRACTION of men and lie that more men are like that - when actually, the truth is JUST AS MANY WOMEN behave as badly!

I watched the 2019 Twilight Zone reboot last year, and one episode titled "Not All Men" stood out to me. In the episode, a meteor from space causes all men to become violent, except for one gay man who remains with the female protagonists. Even husbands turn on their wives, attacking the female characters. By the end, it's revealed that the meteor was merely a placebo, suggesting that men are naturally violent and capable of acting out without any real trigger or reason.

I remember feeling deeply hurt by how mainstream media—particularly a show on Paramount+—portrayed men in such a negative, one-dimensional way. It lacked any empathy or acknowledgment of men's perspectives, especially in relation to the original meaning behind the phrase "not all men are like that." To me, that phrase was meant to push back against the media's tendency to generalize and lump all men together with those who commit terrible acts.

Feminists use this tag to silence critics who point out the blatant sexism that is endemic in their movement . This from a movement who claims it exists to fight sexism. Feminist are the very definition of hypocrisy.

Sorry, I think this is a case of the paving of good intentions. I'm sure you mean well but

1) the hashtag implicitly implies that a small group of Men are abusers and mysogynists. If we wanted to do hashtags, something like #VeryFewMen might be better.

2) I refuse to prescribe to some notion of what is a "good man" and "chivalry". I'm going to live my life as a human being - I have nothing to prove to the world about why I'm not bad. Innocence is the default state and you shouldn't have to go out of your way to be some paragon of healthy masculinity.

I'd rather go for #notjustmen and remind the world that abusers can be or either gender. That would flip the narrative rather than go along with it.

I've got a good one, my dad. He was honestly the most stable parental figure in my life, and he really shaped who I am as a person. Obviously he wasn't perfect, but he was always a very loving and understanding person.

It pisses me off to no end whenever someone says that men can't be good fathers. So many people think that the woman is the one who will make the best parent, but in my personal experience, it's quite easy for them to be severely abusive/neglectful.

I've honestly been very quiet about how I genuinely feel about this topic. I'm so sick of not being able to just flat out say "actually there's plenty of great men out there" without putting a million disclaimers on it, lol.

Good idea - we need to keep saying it until more people are comfortable saying it, as it truly is “NotAllMen.” Of the 0.2% of American men convicted (not necessarily validly) of a violent crime every year, roughly 1% of those men are responsible for about 2/3 of such crime. Given that, it’s easy to have distorted perceptions of any demographic if those viewpoints are based on the most visible members.
