Throwaway account. How did everyone handle paying for lawyer when cash is dwindling? Have options but not sure which is best route. More info in body. Thanks for any help!.

I was given 3 days to pay over 11k to xw and 21k to her lawyer. This included the current month and previous month of spousal support (over 5k per month).

I ended up making a payment plan with her lawyer. 5k every other month and 6k at the last payment for a total of 21k. My credit limit on that card went from 7k to 40k. I also got 2% cash back from the citi credit card.

My lawyer fees have exceeded 100k since the process took over 4 years with 3 judges and 4 of her liars (lawyers). All we had to do was split:

Medical and personal debt.
Retirement accounts.
Brothel (marital residence where adultery occurred) I lost all value
Get my name off her car that I bought and paid for
Bank account/assets. I left everything in the brothel.

This took over 4 years with no children in Illinois.

No kids, no property, and you’ve already spent $15,000? Your divorce should have been resolved by now and nowhere near that amount. This should have been a straightforward settlement agreement unless the issue is alimony. Even in that case, the process typically involves moving to mediation as quickly as possible, and then trial if necessary. I recommend reviewing the court docket and invoices to understand why so much has been spent on a case without children or complex assets. Something doesn’t add up.

I was VERY fortunate for the extra covid funds. My attorney let me pay monthly. Then after a year or so she said she was extending to me and some others a deal she had made with those that were behind to knock off 30 percent if paid within like two months.

When my ex wife tried taking full custody for the 3rd time in as many years (she tried a total of 6 times in 6 years) my friends and family helped me setup a gofundme page and was able to raise enough for another deposit for a new lawyer. The 4th time, I had a very good friend lend me half of a deposit while I scrounged up the rest. I’ve since paid my friend back. The 5th and 6th time I was in a better place financially and was able to charge it on credit cards and pay off. It gets better. I promise. It just takes a lot of time, anxiety, and tears.

Borrowing against is better than cashing it out, so there is that.

I had to put some stuff on Credit cards.

I leaned fast to only communicate when needed and to group things in a large email. I HAD to learn to stop entertaining things that were, at the end of the day, more emotional than operational.

Is your spouse in a situation where they would love to see you run dry? If so you may NOT want to tip your hand that is the case.

I continued to just save. I planned my divorce for a year and then asked to separate. I saved during that time. My state doesn’t have bonafide legal separation so it was weird. I don’t really have an answer, I’ve already spent $4k just to serve her there first round of MSA. So far we are going no-contest. If it goes to mediation or court, I’ll be here asking the same questions lol.

Do you have friends or family you can borrow from? I ended up borrowing from family, then when I got the house in my name I took out a home equity loan to rid my debt to family and now i just pay the bank every month.
