I get your point but these two deliberately destroyed a world famous landmark that can't be replaced and drew national outrage. Their sentences are extremely lenient for 4 years each. That tree was extremely valuable, world famous, and was over 100 years old.

It wasn't just a tree. It was a 300-year-old cultural landmark and part of Hadrian's Wall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It's not like a wall which was knocked down which could be rebuilt, it was permanently destroyed

If it was up to me, anyone who chopped down a tree in a neighborhood for reasons outside of tree health would be sentenced to prison. A mature, regularly renewed urban forest is one of the key differences between a community being a great place to live, and being an uninhabitable dumpster.

Causing harmful effects to others just because "it's funny" or your "bored" is one of the stupidest things that one person can do. You should aspire to get balanced with nature ( don't hunt for fun ) or chop living trees, if you don't need resources, let others, future generations or people in need to have them. We should stop making excuses or giving "free out of jail cards" to those who deserve it causing harm to others around them.

Chopping down trees all willy-nilly is a problem if that's what they were doing. I think they should face some kind of punishment. But 2 to 4 years is insane!! Just give them a fine or something.
