If the other side starts playing games, push for a fast trial date. But really, with no property, no kids, no real financial issues, this shit should be wrapped up in thirty days. If it takes much longer -- the lawyers are fucking around, looking for billable hours. Truth.

Don't let them bill the shit out of this. You need to shut this shit down and press for a trial date.

When it comes to informal discovery, I’d require clear limits to be placed on the requests as well as full mutuality of exchange (whether or not you care). But in the end, I’d be open to providing what the court would order me to provide anyway, again provided it’s mutual.

In your position, I wouldn’t freak out yet. From her lawyer’s perspective they can’t recommend her to settle unless they have some information. They may just be wanting to open the door to go fishing, and being nice to get as much “free” discovery from you as possible. Alternatively, if they’re shitbags, they’ll take the discovery and tell her she could get a lot more than you’ve “agreed” together to start the fire. In some jurisdictions, even uncontested cases require the parties to complete and file financial affidavits (with attachments), so you may need to do it anyway - again, hard to get a read from what you’ve written.

As for her not talking to you, no idea what that means. Do you think your compliance with voluntary discovery would upset her?

Practical advice: don’t push, don’t chase, don’t beg for the case to move forward and settle - that will just delay things. Don’t make a great offer, because they’ll always ask for more even if it’s already fair or generous. Draw your lines and push back for mutuality or get something in exchange for your voluntary acts. Whenever they reach out to you, reply back in a way that makes them commit to deadlines and then progressing the matter. And when they request something, don’t be hop to Johnny on the spot.

In the grand scheme of things, it doesn’t matter if it takes 2 months or 8 months if you’re not burning lawyer fees like crazy. The impulse to want it over is strong but really serves no purpose except to fog your mind. Tell yourself right now it’s going to take a year, plan for that. And when it doesn’t, you’ll be fine. But pushing usually has the opposite effect. They should be chasing you, not vice versa.

The biggest issue that can drag out a divorce is kids because all the issues have to be decided. In law, time is money. For a 2 year divorce, there is only so much marital assets to accumulate and if there is alimony it will be small. There is only so much to discover.

They can try to drag it out, just respond to discovery quickly and move on (unless it's stupid items that are irrelevant). The more you deal with the discovery and evidence yourself, the less the bill is from your lawyer.

It will. Her lawyers want some of the cut. Thats how they survive. You pay for a lawyer now that wants their cut too. Welcome to the system. It really sucks and trust me, It’s never enough. It keeps going as long as possible. Why you ask? Because without you and I paying, the lawyers don’t get to sit down with the judges at fancy restaurants and lavish outings from the system that was created to serve them. We pay they enjoy.

I told my lawyer it was uncontested. They filed and asked for everything and my ex got scared and got a lawyer because everybody told her to. Now it’s been a stalemate for nine months and I am just being bled dry by legal fees.
