I’m writing this without any expectation that you will ever read it. I’m writing it because I need to be honest. I don't need to change your mind, but I need to fully face what I did and what it cost you.

I hurt you.

Not in a small way. Not in some misunderstanding. I broke something fundamental...your sense of safety in your marriage, in your own home, and in the person you trusted most. I crossed a line that should never have been crossed, and I realize that the impact of that matters far more than any explanation I could give.

What I did wasn’t just a mistake... it was a betrayal. And I see now that betrayal doesn’t live only in the mind. It lives in the body. It changes how someone breathes, how they react to their own space, how they react to a presence that once felt like home. Knowing that I am the reason your nervous system feels unsafe is something I will always carry. My temper should not have been your burden to bear.

I also see how often, in the past, I listened defensively instead of openly. How when you came to me in pain, I heard accusation instead of fear. How my avoidance, my shutdowns, and my inability to sit with discomfort left you feeling alone, even when we were still together. That loneliness didn’t start with this last act, but I understand now how this made it unbearable.

I want to say this clearly... none of that is your fault. Your reaction is valid, your need for distance is valid, your boundaries are valid, not your anger and silence are valid. You do not owe me warmth, reassurance, forgiveness, or a future. You owe yourself safety and I respect that.

I am sorry for the pain I caused you, for the trust I shattered, and for the burden you’ve had to carry because of my actions. I am sorry that my choices turned love into something that now requires protection.

If there is one thing I want you to know, without asking anything in return... I am taking responsibility for my healing. I can't undo the past. But I never want to be the source of this kind of pain again... to you, to our children, or to anyone.

What we shared mattered. You mattered. You still do. And even if our paths never come back together, I will always regret the ways I hurt you and honor the truth of what you gave me.

I am sorry.

I didn’t stop loving you. I got lost in my unhealed parts, the ones that made love feel like pressure instead of safety. That doesn’t lessen what I did or the pain it caused you. You didn’t imagine the fear or the distance...my actions taught your body it wasn’t safe. I am working on those parts of me because they are mine to heal, not because I expect anything from you.
