You consider that chances are, not even all of those views are men
You consider how many of those are the same person visiting the same page
You consider people who checked the tag out of disbelief

I’m more struck by the angry pushback when it was revealed these were just 1,000 men from a Telegram group - and I mean long screeds saying overstating the truth by 62,000 times didn’t matter and any man saying it does is the problem.

On the plus side, I’ve seen several female influencers saying this is insane - and God bless them!

It's become blatantly apparent that a lot of people online are more into having their fear-based misandry and overly online breadtubey ideology catered to than anything else.

It's really quite soul melting to see and feel that all of these people who play at being advocates online for equality and for victims of SA don't ACTUALLY seem to care all that much about victims. Victims are their smokescreen.

What they really care about is having their extreme grievance based mentality and ideology reinforced and validated. They NEED that horrifying shit to be true, because it makes them feel vindicated in their hatred.

You can't look at the reaction to this and not see the objective fact that far too many people are behaving like they're genuinely UPSET the 62 figure is wrong...when any sane person would breath a sigh of relief we're not, y'know, living in a society where the population size of the UK is training to become rapists.

But no, the knee-jerk reaction to this isn't to take a step back and say "Oops, fell for some misinfo, my bad. Let's parse out the truth and go from there." No, the response was to shift goalposts instantly. And suddenly the numbers don't matter.

You know what I thought when I read about all this? It wasn't about how online feminist and leftist spaces often engage in just as much bad faith misinfo as the right, it wasn't about my grievances with how a lot of leftist and progressive commentary has gone.

No, it was about how I wish we had a better handle on stamping out spaces like this online that foster and cater to the worst of humanity.

But what do I see on "my side" of the political spectrum online? Sensationalism. Lightning fast spreading of lies and misinformation. Fear-mongering. Justification to hate an entire gender.

It's at the point now where I don't want to call myself a leftist anymore, but simply a humanist or egalitarian. I'm "leftist" in my economic philosophy. And my views on equality are also leftist. But the overall community of leftism has alienated me so much that I have no hope for it to ever come together for a common good.

So I'm just going to shed any hardline political identity and just call myself a humanist from now on.
