Thanks to all who responded, esp /u/funstuffing; I didn't even know keto was a thing and I've spent the better part of yesterday researching the proven benefits of a keotogenic diet. /r/keto is a goldmine of information and actual results.

I don't have a major issue with the women at work. I get it: they see me as a low SMV male and treat me accordingly, but in spite of that, I have always seen myself as a alpha(even pre-trp) and have never taken shit from somebody and don't intend to do so now. Which is the cause of the conflict, they expect me to take shit, do what they want, and/or supplicate to them, but my natural response is to exhibit my superiority both through words and actions. Hamster:"He's an overweight, balding, Indian IT nerd, why isn't he acting like the beta he is, why doesn't he want to get us lunch or laugh at our jokes" Because I ran my own company for almost a decade and am only taking this job to pay bills and because I see you as useless gossip machines who have little to no value, that's why..............is what I think but don't say.

Which is why you can see I have a problem with the some of the advice given which boils down to : "ignore them". I can ignore the women and their catty/passive-agressive, and even bait comments intended to provoke a reaction. And I have been ignoring them. And that works fine.

But how do you ignore another man, a peer, standing over you at your desk, waving his arms, and raising his voice at you. How do you "agree & amplify" or "calmly deflect" another man, who you know you can beat the shit out of if this was on the streets, repeatedly telling you: "Man, Fuck you, you ain't shit" in a loud and aggressive voice. Again, this is a open floor design and everybody can see and hear the dressing down. This results in even the most timid mouse being emboldened and shit-testing me.

Ignore and Agree & amplify works very well when it comes to shit-tests & passive-agressive BS, especially from women, but it's not a solution when you are being deliberately disrespected. If you "ignore" or "deflect" the disrespect, you are seen as weak, passive person, and like sharks who smell blood miles away, everybody will take shots at you for whatever reason. In your bid to avoid conflict and rise above the pettiness, you become a source of office entertainment, a clown, a court jester.

So this is what I came up with by way of solution:

  • the women? ignore them, or agree & amplify. It's a strategy that actually works and I seen it myself.

  • With the wannabe corporate thug, I was going to pull him to the side and record our conversation(if i have to use it later); I would tell him that his use of profanity and racial slurs(he referred to another manager as a "white bitch") was not only offensive and inappropriate, but that it was a firing offense. I would tell him not to joke with me at all as he doesn't observe boundaries or basic work etiquette, and I would tell him that "I don't like workplace drama, which is why I'm talking to you directly; if however, you continue with the profanity and racial slurs, this will escalate". <--- I need help with the wording and would appreciate any suggestions, I would say all of this in a matter of fact tone.

  • If he thinks rationally and fears for his job, then great, no more disrespect; maybe he'll paint me as a whiny snitch , but I honesty do not care what anybody there thinks of me(except management who I'm on good terms with and praise my work regularly)

  • If however he takes this as a challenge and continues with the disrespect , then I wouldn't go to HR first, I would go to his manager(we work for different departments) after gathering evidence which I already have. Once his manager hears this guy is walking-talking liability machine, I'me sure he'll fear for his job if he doesn't put a stop to it

Thoughts? Advice? Any other solutions?

EDIT: Concerns regarding going to HR:

  • I will be perceived as a "problem" employee. I've already been in 2 verbal confrontation with 2 female coworkers which didn't escalate, but still. He can easily galvanise the other staff to support him in a "He said-he said" situation.

  • He's been here almost a decade, i've been here for 6 months.

  • All in all, he has less to lose; at this juncture, I CANNOT afford to lose my job; he clearly can.

HR positives: I have evidence(witness testimony) of his profanity & racial slurs, but given his seniority, his minority status, and his IDGAF, he's got little to lose, i can see this going to some sort of mediation, sensitivity training route. And then what have I gained?

So I'm leaning towards either ignoring him as many have suggested, or talking to him in a serious manner and letting him know that this will be escalated to his bosses. I'm thinking the threat of him losing his job would be more impactful and produce the desired result. If I actually went to HR, he would see it as "fucking with his lifeblood" and he would respond accordingly(ie, lies, false allegation, false witnesses, etc)

Do you still think it's worth it going to HR despite the negative ramification that may arise, or is that my inner hamster spinning, rationalizing me away from a unpleasant ordeal?
