Studies actually confirm this.

Once someone cheats they either internalize they are bad and keep going (eg, I already failed the course, so why bother showing up for the exam), or they become someone who can rationalize cheating and excuses it for themselves while feeling they they're still good people.

It's really rare that a person actually acknowledges it was wrong and uses it to improve future relationships.
