I'm a black male. I'm conscious that when I'm on the street late at night my presence can make some white men feel uncomfortable (sad but true fact). I've been behaving in ways that I think make me less threatening (crossing the street to pass you on the other side of the road, slowing down to let the gap between us get bigger rather than smaller, making noise so you know I'm there etc) but it just occurred to me while reading answers to another question that perhaps I should get it from the horse's mouth. So, tips and hints for how black males should behave when walking at night please.

It might be my age, geography, demographic, I dunno...but why is Reddit the only place I see all of this rape talk? Does a a woman's need for validation reach such a point that they need to make themselves feel like every man they cross in life wants to rape them?

I remember when i arrived at university there was a leaflet about "how to be safe" etc. and one of the points actually advised men to cross the other side of the road if there was a loan female walking so not to frighten her.

It wasn't a rule obviously but i actually said out loud, "fuck that" as if i have to pander to the insecurities of morons and go out of my way because they assume all men are rapists.

They will try this bullshit everywhere.

If it's late at night in a bad neighborhood and I see someone coming toward me I let them know I see them and don't let them out of my sight until they are no longer a threat.

I'm also a big guy with a shaved head and am probably seen as a threat to most people. That's fine. I consider everyone to be a threat unless I know better. The trick is knowing you can handle the threat.

That's the problem, they expect everyone else to do it for them.

In fairness on a dark street at night girls are very vulnerable. I'm not going out of my way to negate her fear but I usually give a little space and use non-threatening body language. I just see it as general politeness, like holding a door open for someone. But I'm not going to go out of my way for some entitled bitch, just like I won't stand there for 5 minutes waiting for some fatty to waddle up to a door.
