Hi guys.
I've spent a lot of time - most of my life, actually - focusing on self improvement. I'm a junior in college studying engineering, I have decent grades, kickass work/research experience and some super interesting hobbies that I'm really passionate about. I don't really chase women, but that's because I'm busy doing other things, not because I'm incapable.
I made the mistake of logging into Facebook for the first time in forever, I was curious to see what happened to some of my friends in highschool. I came across the profile of a girl I worked with a few years ago, she's in ASU now, total party slut, her profile picture is her wrapped around some muscular frat-bro. None of this is a surprise, obviously, but I went onto his profile to see what sort of guy he is. And you know what? He looks like he's having fun.
Even though I don't party and I rarely drink, I don't feel like I'm missing out on the 'college experience,' something many people on TRP whine that they'll never have. My attitude has always been to work hard now and I'll have fun later in life when I have a solid source of income.
But the truth is, I work hard, see success, but I'm not really enjoying myself. And then I see that muscular frat-bro, and he's smiling. He's got his arm around this beautiful girl, beer in the other hand, standing on the beach. His cover photo is him and the rest of his fraternity, blasted half way to the moon, going nuts jumping off a cruiseship somewhere. Is he setting himself up for failure later in life? Maybe. I have no idea. He could be the son of some billionaire or a big man on campus like Hoyt Thorpe. Or else he could be just another loser douchebag that'll be fucked as soon as he graduates. But it doesn't matter, because the fact that he can muster up such a happy expression, even if it's backed by drugs, means he's doing something right.
I've been working so hard for so long that living a hedonistic lifestyle would be empty. I wouldn't feel fulfilled. Contrast that to what I have now where I'm doing good things and I'm productive, but I'm so tired that I can't even step back to enjoy life. And there's no end in sight. Even when I'm making good money, I'll still be working that much harder.
I know /u/Archwinger's going to tell me that life isn't about having fun or being happy all the time, it's about doing the right thing, wherever you set the subjective standard for right and wrong. And I have my standards that aren't subject to change.
In the same vein I expressed this to my father. His response: "What do you want me to say? Go out, use drugs, waste time, fuck a bunch of women. You think that will make you happy?"
There isn't really much to discuss here, but I wanted to get this off my chest to an audience that might be able to sympathize somewhat. It's not much of a question, but it's certainly not appropriate for the main sub. I don't have much of a name in TRP but I've been posting on occasion for more than a year, reading a lot more than writing. Like I told /u/ciswhitemaelstrom recently in a PM: discovering TRP was the best and worst thing that has ever happened to me.
“I don’t know what’s worse: to not know what you are and be happy, or to become what you’ve always wanted to be, and feel alone.” ― Daniel Keyes, Flowers for Algernon
