NYT article by therapist admits role of appearance in attracting a mate: lambasting ensues. I agree with the author; it's absurd that his attempts to address his patient's love life through her dowdy appearance are derided as being sexist. Thoughts?

Lol! "A woman dresses for herself." Well she can please herself then because no one else will want to.

I will never understand the childish obliviousness people will play in regards to the realities of physical attraction. I bet these are the same women who harshly judge men for their appearance, and control what their SO's wear... maybe throw out his favorite shirts, etc.

[–]pcadrian 12 points12 points12 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

A woman dresses for herself.

I used to get so riled up at the stupidity of these people, but not anymore. Life and reality eventually catches up to them all. There is a great quote by Corey Wayne: You can ignore reality, but you can't ignore the consequences of ignoring reality.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Exactly. They have no concept of reality. Their narcissism blinds them from loving others and receiving love.

[–]2PantsLady4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah I never understood that. If it wasn't for my husband, I'd dress in pajamas all day, but I actually dress for him, and In pretty sure that most women dress with the intention to impress.

[–]freebumblebeeendorsed woman23 points24 points25 points 11 years ago (16 children) | Copy Link

I feel bad for her. She was obviously raised her whole life being told looks don't matter and that a real man will love her for who she is, whilst simultaneously being informed that the only thing men want is sex and that if she dresses a certain way men will only want sex out of her, not a relationship. It's messed up. It's just like all the men over on TRP figuring out that pretending to be someone's friend and being nice to someone won't make her want to fuck him. I feel bad for them too. Attraction is so important, from both sides of the fence.

I'm not disgusted by people like her. I don't hate them. I don't look at them with derision. I pity them. I feel awful for them. Everyone got the same general message, but only some of us were able to take the true bits and add in our own experiences. I can't imagine having to go through life never getting that family or husband you desire. It sounds horribly sad and disappointing.

[–]weekendshift 7 points7 points7 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

This is a great way to look at it. It's so easy to knee jerk annoyance/frustration with these people.

[–]freebumblebeeendorsed woman16 points17 points18 points 11 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

Maybe I'm just a weirdo, but I don't really hate anyone. It's the way I've always been, but after reflecting on it, I think hate is a really unhealthy mindset to hold. I see a lot of it on RPW and I find it pretty upsetting. We try to be the best we can be, even on this forum--like venting about your SO or dissenting is enough to get your comments deleted.

But I see a lot of vitriol towards women who aren't doing very good, despite their efforts. Frankly, I don't find it feminine, I don't find it ladylike, and I don't think it makes a good person. You know how people say you can really learn a lot about someone by how they treat the waiter? That works across the board. If you're an angel to your SO but treat other women like crap...you're not a good person.

We should react with empathy, with sympathy, with pity, with understanding, even with nonchalance, but we should not react to the less fortunate with disgust, anger, vitriol, derision--even if they've brought it upon themselves. Everyone starts somewhere.

Sorry that you sort of got the brunt of a rant not really directed at you, but it's been bugging me lately!

Neither do I and I agree. Generally, I tend to be more of a moderate/light red/ “damn, can’t we all just kumbaya around the campfire just once, people?” variety. Poking around all these subs -red/purple/blue/whatever -has been…an experience.

I see a lot of it on RPW and I find it pretty upsetting (…) But I see a lot of vitriol towards women who aren't doing very good, despite their efforts.

A lot of the time, I think there is, so to speak, a “method to the madness.” Do I agree with it all the time? No. But I find at times I do appreciate it for what it is and the point that is being (trying to be) made, anyway. I do think it’s up to people to determine how much they’re willing to take, if they’re willing to distill the ‘point of the post’ from the aggressive approach and see if it’s something that’s applicable to you.

(...) you're not a good person. (…)We should react with (…) Everyone starts somewhere.

One of the reasons I decided to give this place a chance, keep up with the sub (relatively speaking, I’m not a prolific poster by any means :p ) is because I have seen members here do exactly that. I’ve seen the mods take down advice needed threads and actually walk the OP through whatever problem she was going through (not that the OP did something wrong/off from RP standards, but a ‘mod response only’ setup was more appropriate). Even when they take threads down for not being on topic for the sub, they still tend to leave a helpful comment for the OP. Those were the sort of things that made me say, 'fine, let me try this for myself and see.'

My own opinion - I really do think the members here are more diverse than people, including those in the red network, give them credit for. And with the pool of members, you’re also going to get a diverse set of relationships and experiences (and therefore, when it’s asked for, advice) that still fall under the sub's banner. I do think if you can keep that in mind – and give this place a try, the way it’s currently running, for a period of time and see if it has any worth to you, personally - you will be better off.* Hopefully, you aren’t taking me to be facetious here as that really isn’t my intent, but getting points across online can be difficult.

* I could, of course, be talking utter nonsense and the mods will “lol, no” me. Tbh, I think the sub has calmed down its level of intensity some, since I first wandered into this place and started lurking. That or I’ve just gotten used to things and I’m more nonplussed about how these subs tend to trend. Either/or…probably both. :D

I stick around because I genuinely like the idea of this place and feel like it's making me more aware of my flaws and shortcomings, so I can better change them. It just feels so harsh and mean sometimes, with a very harsh us/them mentality. It feels quick to ostracize. And I don't like that. This place is definitely softer than TRP is, which I appreciate. I just don't like having to put people down or hate people in order to talk to likeminded women. And I know I obviously don't have to, and I've made it this far here without doing so--but it's just so prevalent that it can be disheartening. Your reply is definitely nice to read, thank you for taking the time to write it out. I feel better for having read it.

[–]TempestTcup2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

Yes, us mods are "harsh and mean" sometimes because we need to keep the sub on point so it doesn't devolve into "U GO GURRRLLL!!!" /r/TwoXChromosomes style. Sometimes we have to be "harsh and mean" to knock some sense into women's heads to make them quit being special snowflakes.

If you want "empathy, with sympathy, with pity, with understanding" then haul your ass out of here and go to /r/relationships where you will get all of that.

We aren't here to hold your hand and say everything is going to be fine; we are here to give you the resources to make your relationship the best it can be. Think of it as a sort of anti-feministic boot camp.

[–]freebumblebeeendorsed woman0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You haven't actually removed my comments yet, unless it happened since I posted. I apologize if I'm causing an issue--it's really not intentional. I didn't really expect this many people to notice the comment at all! I'm definitely not referring to tough love. I'm referring to comments where someone is mean without offering advice just because they feel superior. Perhaps this would better be addressed at the moment.

[–]TempestTcup1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Oh, those are usually trolls from a different sub. Please report any comments like that so we can remove them.

[–]StingrayVC1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Ahh, I see now. You actually are talking about RPW.

It just feels so harsh and mean sometimes

It feels . . . It doesn't matter what you feel. Here's the thing, I don't think any of us particularly like being harsh, but being harsh so that we can peel back all the lies is far more caring than plastering on any kind of "nice" facade that women comfortably live in today. It's that very box of nice that have allowed women, all of us, to fester into this crap that we are dealing with today.

Your feelings don't matter here and just because you feel like we are are harsh, by no means means that we are actually mean. We are FAR more kind than any nice place that you might go to as we do not fear the truth. Those places are out there for you to feel good. Go to them to spare your feelings. Stay here for the truth. It's up to you.

[–]StingrayVC1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

We should react with empathy, with sympathy, with pity, with understanding, even with nonchalance

Been there, done that. It's /r/relationships and you see where that goes. If you prefer it, it's there. We are not /r/relationships and the fact that we aren't afraid to call women out on their mistakes is how that plays out. That you see it as "disgust, anger, vitriol, derision" says more about you than it does about us.

We wouldn't be here taking the time to call women out who say they want our help if we didn't care, if we didn't have something invested in this. Holding these women's hands didn't work, doesn't work and won't work. If it did, then there wouldn't have been reason to start this sub. It goes no where.

EDIT: I now see you weren't just talking about this sub, so my comment is a bit off base. However, having said that, while people do deserve some degree of sympathy for what they've been taught, it is exactly that sympathy that we have a desire to give that people feed off of and continue to take more from us by continuing to push and push for more in the way of feminist BS. It is this sympathy that gave way to microagressions, rape culture and all that BS to be able to gain ground. If we had stopped the sympathy and said enough!!, we wouldn't be in the position we are in. These women would have been told the truth and we wouldn't have to be here in our tiny sub helping women to pick up the pieces from all they were taught.

[–]freebumblebeeendorsed woman1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I mentioned elsewhere, but I'm not talking about tough love. I think constructive advice is necessary, and I love that this place calls people out. I'm talking about when a comment isn't constructive at all, just mean.

[–]StingrayVC1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What you perceive as mean, doesn't mean that is the intent.

If it is the intent, ask yourself why? People say stupid things here all the time, which directly leads others down a poor path because women will use this bad advice as it's ok and even good to make poor choices. If being mean stops the stupidity and prevents women from making poor choices, then so be it.

We are not here to be nice.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Where is any hatred or derision for her being expressed either here or in the article? Any disgust? Who is mocking her or lacking sympathy?

How will expressing sympathy help her? This woman threw her opportunity to have a home and family away for no reason, and everyone "niced" her into it. Someone should have had the KINDNESS to break through her wall of bullshit and set her straight. Life is short and you only get to live it once. This woman is not HAPPY with what she ended up with, she WISHES life had been different.

You simply dont understand how women think. If a woman is embarking on a destructive course, any and all expressions of sympathy or understanding will be taken as validation of that choice. She will not hear ANY construction criticism or hard choices embedded in the soothing comforting tones of sympathy, she will only have her sad self pitying feelings validated and stay on her self destructive course to its inevitable lonely, self medicating end

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It's just like all the men over on TRP figuring out that pretending to be someone's friend and being nice to someone won't make her want to fuck him.

They weren't pretending. That is why there is so much anger. Being shot down isn't a big deal. Finding out that people who you considered friends were just using you and actually think you are pathetic would bring out the rage in almost anyone.

[–]freebumblebeeendorsed woman2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It's possible we're discussing two different phenomenons. I'm talking about situations where men think the best way to get a woman into a relationship is to feign friendship with her when they actually only desire a relationship. They get increasingly bitter, because they think they're doing everything right, but they're not getting what they want, which is sex or a relationship. Meanwhile, she thinks the guy just wants to be her friend, because he's acting like he just wants to be her friend. Then one of them wises up and it all goes to hell. I feel awful for both people. The first time it happens to either is a real eye opener for the people involved--and unfortunately some people need several of those moments to really wise up.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

We are talking about the same thing. Hamsters just turn one into the other.

[–]lisfb4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

He obviously cares about her and her overall wellbeing; he had spent over ten years listening to her life stories, working with her and seeing her improve and grow. I’d like to think after a decade together of steadfast biweekly appointments - and then some when she moved back and opted to start visiting his office again - he knew Greta (her temperament, personality what she wanted in life) and he wasn’t making commentary to hurt her feelings or just for the hell of it.

He saw she was struggling, he thought that perhaps how she presented herself was a problem, and wanted to make sure, covering all bases/on the off chance she didn’t know, that maybe her aesthetic/the vibe she gave off was a possible deterrent (it was his office mate, a neutral third party who didn’t know her at all, who saw her and made the comment, describing her as dowdy).

I understand why Greta was immediately defensive (“my friends say I look great!” etc) and I get why the comment section took him to task over it…but I feel this is the sort of thing that leaves people trying to protect someone’s feelings to that person’s own detriment. I feel this is why people opt to tell little white lies to people they care about (or, depending on the situation, people they don’t care about) because, hey, don’t kill the messenger. People, understandably, don’t want to feel bad for making others feel bad/uncomfortable and it’s easier (in the moment, anyway) to be merciful and keep untoward opinions to one’s self.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I feel this is the sort of thing that leaves people trying to protect someone’s feelings to that person’s own detriment.

This is why we are harsh here. We have like five minutes to push through a woman lifetime accretion of pretty lies and get her to see what she's doing to HERSELF. It aint always pretty

Noted. Thanks, w.

[–]Pink_acetaminophen3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Pfft "circle of friends","New circle of friends". If your so called friends watch you be alone and miserable from being frumpy and ugly but don't tell you you're ugly to your face then they're not friends.

[–]lvioletsnow1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This was pretty much my first thought. As soon as I read: 'But my friends--!!' I immediately thought of the whole DUFF dynamic. By keeping her dowdy and around the rest of the female flock can make themselves more attractive by comparison and have something to lord over/gloat about when she's not around. They may not be as accomplished as she is but look, she can't get a man! Teehee!

[–]NJP_M1CK3Y-0F-M0U533 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What I took from the article is that, looks do in fact matter. Society teaches us that if you have a great personality, you can get a great husband/wife! But that's false, aesthetics are hard wired into the primitive parts of our minds to desire better looking men and women than the less built, "Nicer" gals and guys.
