This probably isn't a popular opinion, but the government (in the US) has created a society in which men aren't needed. You don't need a man! Your employer will take care of you. You don't need a man! The government will pay for the food on your table.

My friend works for one of these tech companies. Its a very testosterone driven environment. Your bonuses are based on performance. And they are big. Everyone works incredibly hard. Working 60 hours / week is quite usual. Its very hostile. I know many mums who stagnate at the same position. If you stay in the same position for too long then you are marked by HR. I know quite a few who got sacked in the cleanup round.

The only way to survive is to climb the ladder. I can fully understand why they want to freeze the eggs and get it later. I also know some who have played the sex card with higher management to short the climb.

I've worked there and you realize its a jungle. From outside it looks very shiny.

Women are still going to be unhappy. They literally are not going to ever be happy unless they come to terms with their inner-woman. As long as they try emulating men by climbing the career ladder and aiming for higher status men--most of which are unreachable for average women--they simply will not be happy.

This is exactly why I hate being a female in the tech industry. Just gorram stop trying to make everything woman friendly, there's enough bias enough as it is. My male coworkers don't deserve all this stupidity.

Can't we for once, hire people for their brains, not what's between their legs?

Yikes.. I don't even know what to think! I mean, I guess it's nice to have the option - VERY nice for fertility issues, late marriage, etc - but it seems to also be avoiding the real issue.

Thawed eggs only have a 75% fertilization rate and 65% successful pregnancy/birth rate (according to uscfertility.org), and I'll bet Apple and Facebook aren't advertising that. It's all, "Hey, don't worry about it, invest your best years here and have a baby later on" like it's a guaranteed thing. Very interested to hear what others have to say!

Also chances are the baby would have some sort of defect. There's a reason why women don't produce good quality eggs after a certain age - the body knows it's past its child bearing years.

The point of this is to circumvent that. It's encouraging these women to freeze their eggs in their 20s so they have healthy, "young" eggs in their 30s and 40s.

For some reason, I think very few young women will actually freeze her eggs. They will end up freezing when they are 30 and seeing the wall in their face. Extracting eggs isn't exactly an easy process. Men can wank in a cup and be done in 5 minutes if they want their sperm frozen, but it is a lot more difficult for women. Also, choosing to freeze your eggs when you are 22 years old is like admitting defeat on the relationship front. Young women want to believe they can have everything and I doubt many of them will do the procedure at age 22 when they first get into Facebook or Apple.

From your first comment, I thought you were missing the point. If I'm understanding you correctly now, you're just saying that old eggs are just one piece of the puzzle.

Additionally, there has been research in recent years showing that the age of the man producing the sperm isn't as insignificant as we once thought.

Yea my point was exactly that.

And it only makes sense that as people get older, their reproductive ability will reduce - applies for both women and men. But what is the cut off age for men though? Is it 30? My instincts say men's age will be significant around the 50 year mark. I might be way off with that guess.

While that is true, it is not a good comparison. Most women over the age of forty will have significant difficulty carrying a child to term. As where men over the age of 30 who impregnate someone have a small but significantly greater chance of passing on handful of neurological disorder. While there is variability, women's fertility faces a sharp decline in their late 30s. Most men can have health children through their life.

Now that's just male hamstering. It is common sense really. The older men get, the more weaker their sperm gets. And there are studies that show a correlation between old age in first time fathers and kids with defects. Having kids later on in life is not a gamble worth taking in my opinion (unless you are in a bad financial position).

Yeah, but then you have risks associated with childbirth at older ages and epigenetic issues that we still don't know all the details about yet. It's not a 100% safe method, even if you do have the money. I considered IVF plus genetic testing on my embryos for fertility/genetic reasons and still was hoping out of it. Not to mention if you get pregnant at 40 you may not even be able to see the birth your grandchildren if the cycle continues, let alone have enough health/energy to raise young children.

I considered doing something similar, but even if we had the finances I don't think I would be comfortable delaying everything.

I think it's going to be funny when those women hit 40 or 50 and then decide "it's time to have a baby". There's a reason you want to have kids early. You're not going to have the energy to run after a kid in your 40s and 50s. My dad was 40 when he and mom had me. They... were not the liveliest of parents.

I think it's great women are given the opportunity to do this, making them more competitive in this field! It gives women the opportunity of career-making without having to forsake your own chances to have children if you would like to.

It still doesn't solve all the other problems related to being a mother and having a demanding career. Those exist at any age.

It also doesn't address the fact that if you're unable to get pregnant on your own in your late 30s and into your 40s, your body is trying to tell you something. These pregnancies result in much, much higher risks to the mother and the baby.

It's telling women they can put their lives on hold for their careers and it's giving them a false sense of security. Even if your eggs are frozen, there's still a chance that you'll never carry a baby to term in your 40s. If you go through your 20s and 30s thinking you're good to go because you froze your eggs, but you find yourself unable to get or stay pregnant, the infertility will be even more devastating.

It's simply adding on to the bill of goods being sold to young women in America. And it's utterly sad.

I'm predicting a surge in surrogate mothers too. Now you don't even have to deal with the problems of pregnancy, just schedule when you want your baby delivered and as soon as it's born, pass it right to the nanny.

These corporations will certainly have to amend their maternity leave policies as well. I don't know how it's possible to expect everything. The best of all worlds.

Fancy careers, marriage in their 30s, baby in their 40s, 12+ months of maternity leave, full pay, affordable daycare, and a flexible work place to allow you to balance your life.

How do you get so entitled that you think you can have it all? Life is a game of picking and choosing and sacrificing based on what's most important to you. You can't have everything you want.

Surrogate mothers, nannies... mother's that provide the eggs. It actually seems very adaptable and beneficial for females. The added layers of control make for easy child rearing. The only limiting factors I see are cash and sperm. And for a career woman who accelerates in high paid work like the tech sector, cash will be no problem. And sperm banks are a thing.

Actually, a woman could freeze a large quantity of eggs and hire a small army of surrogates and nannies. She could have many children, more than the traditional limits of past generations. If a woman can afford it, it may become common for her to have between 10 and 20 children spaced out over her lifespan.
